The picture of the "Copper Helmet" displays a similar restraint in its composition. The colour effects are all concentrafed in the play of light on the copper, round which flow the red and brown of the plume of hair. The letters of the word "Jlion" absorb the violet of copper tints induced by the light, then return to the dominant cord. The metallic sharpness of the edges stresses material and practical purpose alike. The compo sition is obviously intended to be the title of an edition of the lliad. Neither lettering, artists's mark, nor any of the other decorative work were added to the photographs as an afterthought. Before the pictures were taken the compositions were studied with meticulous attention to details. These two photographs outline a programme. The basic idea is fidelity in the reproduction of material and, this opened up the possibility of interpreting reality through the medium of com position, colour production and lighf. The con- formity of colour and form was revealed. Colour showed its essence to be the offspring of model- ling and the daughter of confrolled light. Realiza- tion of this fact perforce drew attention to the importance of plastic work. The perfect reproduc tion of a painting by direct colour photography is well worth while, for it is revealing in the extreme. But here the mastery in colour of the third dimension had already been obtained by fhe artist, whereas the depicting of a convex piece of plastic work "in the flat" left the problem open. And even if it cannot actually be solved owing to the fact that both convex plastic work and "flat" painting are subject to different laws, some way must be found by which justice can be done to plastic work in its reproduction "in the flat" without an arbitrary distribution of light which is contrary to all the laws of art. Coloured sculpture, above all painted wood, is more suitable in this connexion. Reproduction by direct colour photography cannot fail to show how the structure and pliability of wood is par- ticularly favourable to a plastic method of treat- ment that allows of rounded contours and gives an impression of intimacy. In the case of an old masterpiece this impression is further enhanced by the colour which, accompanying and counter- pointing, lost in the course of time any osfensta- tion which it may have had, in order to give prominence to skill with the knife and harmony of the material with the artist's inspiration. The colour photograph of the Dangolsheim Madonna is a good illustration of these attempts and shows to what extent intimate closeness, observation in solitude of any art treasure can pave the way to art and an understanding of art. It proves too how the opportunity of studying a work of art at Madonna von Dangolsheim The Virgin of Dangolsheim
