them a superior degree of education for the higher branches of service in the army. Those who attend these Institutes are second or first lieutenants, whose admission depends on a previous examination before a commission. The course to last 2 years in each institute. The Central Cavalry School purposes to instruct talented officers of cavalry not only in equi tation, in the art of breaking, treating, and improving horses, but also in the science of leading on, and making use of cavalry. The course of instruction lasts one year, one officer of every regiment of cavalry being admitted. The School for Military Administra tion consists of two divisions, viz. one for officers of military courts of justice, and another for the ad ministrative business of the Military Border-land. The Medico-Surgical Academy is founded for the education of field-physicians and surgeons serving in the army. It is divided into a higher course for the education of doctors of medicine and chirurgery, and a lower course for training surgeons intended for the lower branches of the profession. This Academy stands in equal rank with the me dico-surgical faculty of the Vienna university. The higher course extends to 5, the lower to 3 years. From the higher course the students enter the army as Physicians with the degree of Doctors, bound to do military service for 10 years; from the lower course, as Surgeons with the degree of Chirurgeons, bound to a military service of 8 years. The Military Veterinary Institute in structs individuals for the calling of veterinary sur geons, or farriers, both for the military and civil; and is moreover the chief scientific authority in that pro fession in judicial and police cases on veterinary re gulations. This Institute comprises theVeterinary School for educating veterinary surgeons and farriers, and the School for Shoeing of Horses for-the im provement of ordinary horse-shoe-siniths. Courses for veterinary surgeons last 3 years, for farriers, 2 years. The pupils of the Veterinary Surgeons School enter the army as patented under-veterinary-surgeons, bound to 6 years’ military service. The military pupils of the biennial course join their regiment and are, according to necessity, promo ted to army-farriers. The Educational Institute for daughters of Officers at Hernals, near Vienna, has' been founded for the purpose of facilitating to ! deserving officers or their widows the education j of their daughters. The pupils, amounting to 70, are maintained at the public cost, or enjoy foundation places. I. R. Navy Educational Institutions. There exists in the I. R. Navy: A School for Ship’s Boys. A School for Marine Infantry. A School for Marine Artillery. A School for Marine Pupils of the 1 st Class. A School for Marine Pupils of the 2d Class. A Theoretical Course for Navy Cadets (Midship men). A Higher Course for Navy Officers. The School for ship’s boys has the task of educating young men for warrant-officers. The highest promotion to he attained is that of an upper boat swain. In the- School for marine infantry and artillery, men that are in active service are educated for non-commissioned officers. Those who are apt for commissioned officers may be promoted to such on leaving the school. The School for marine pupils of the 1 st class is on board of a man-of-war designated for that purpose. Young men who, with a proficient tech nical education, enter at the age of 1G or 18 years as marine pupils of the 1 st class, receive here the edu cation necessary for Navy Officers. After a course of one year’s length, they enter the service as, Navy Ca dets; and after these cadets having been 2 or 3 years on board a man-of-war, they enter the theoretical Course for Navy Cadets. The School for marine pupils of the 2d class has the exclusive purpose of educating for Navy Officers those w'ho are admitted as pupils of this class. There are free places as well as such as must be paid for, and instruction is given on a school- ship fitted out for that purpose. After the 3 d annual oourse, the pupils enter ser vice as navy cadets to be practically employed on board; and after 2 or 3 years time more, they are admitted into the theoretical course for navy cadets. The number of these pupils varies from 40 to 50. The navy officers of the School-ship are appointed for directing practical exercises and manoeuvres. The theoretical Course for Navy ca dets is on land, lasting one year. At the end of that course every cadet is to undergo the prescribed exa mination for officers. The higher Course for Navy officers is instituted for the purpose of accomplishing in the higher branches of science those young officers who ' are particularly distinguished for scientific parts and I inclined to further mathematical and hydrographical j studies. The course extending to one and two years duration.
