Die einzige Person, die vor etwa vierzehn Tagen hier eintrat, war einer der Beamten der Bank, den Herr Navenean geschickt hatte, damit er irgend ein Aktenstück unter den vielen Papieren heranssuche." „Wie hieß dieser Beamte?" „Meiner Treu, das weiß ich nicht. Er sagte bloß, er sei in der Bank bedienstet nnd da ließ ich ihn natürlich eiu- treten." „Und blieb er lange in diesem Zimmer?" „Eine Dtunde dürste es wohl gewesen sein." „Würden Die ihn wiedererkennen, wenn Die ihn sähen?" „Ganz gewiß, mein Herr. Er hatte ein bronzesarbenes Gesicht und trug einen Backenbart. — Hütte er mir nicht ge sagt. daß er Bankbeamter sei, ich hätte ihn eher für einen Dcemann gehalten." Johanna zuckte zusammen und Bidache ließ den Kops bescheiden sinken, nachdem er dem jungen Mädchen einen ver ständnisvollen Blick zugeworfen. „Es ist gut, mein Freund, sagte er zu Franz. „Sie kön nen sich zurückzieheu. Ich danke Ihnen für Ihre Aus künfte." Nachdem der Diener das Zimmer verlassen hatte, trat Johanna auf Adam Bidache zu und seine Hand ergreifend, i sprach sie: „Ach, Herr Bidache, wie dankbar bin ich Ihnen für das , Interesse, welches Sie uns entgegenbringen Wenn ^ Die wüßten, welchen Trost ich in meinem Schmerze aus dem Bewußtsein schöpfe, daß ich auf Ihre durch eine außerordent- liche Intelligenz unterstützte Anhänglichkeit rechnen darf." Bidache errötete, geriet außer Fassung und verwandelte sich wieder in den schüchternen, furchtsamen Mann, der er immer war. „Ach Gott, mein Fräulein," sagte er, indem er seine Hand aus der des Mädchens zog, die durch den Druck ganz warm geworden war, „Sie machen mich ganz verwirrt — nnd verdiene ich gewiß nicht — das ganze beruht ja nur auf einiger llebung höchstens — und dann die Vorliebe für diese Dinge. Nun muß ich aber schon gehen. — Ich kehre nach Elamart zurück ich muß einige Erkundigungen einziehen." Damit schritt er zur Tür, blieb hier aber stehen und sagte: „Ich habe Ihnen noch nicht erklärt, weshalb Sie mich beute Morgen in der Morgue gesehen haben. Wenn jemand ermordet wird, so trifft es sich nicht selten, daß der Mörder, nm sein Opfer hcrumschleicht und sich an dem Orte einfindet, >vo dasselbe öffentlich ausgestellt ist. Da ich den Schrift führer der Morgue schon seit langer Zeit kenne, so bat ich um die Erlaubnis, dort zu bleiben, um die Besucher zu beob- achten, die sich einfinden würden. Doch von dem Augenblick an. da der arme Tote erkannt worden ist, habe ich dort nichts mehr zu schaffen, und will ich meine Nachforschungen jetzt in einer anderen Richtung fortsctzen. In fünf oder sechs Tagen werde ich Die wieder aufsuchen, mein Fräulein. Sollten Die mir inzwischen irgend welche Mitteilungen zu machen haben, so kennen Sie ja meine Adresse: Adam Bidache in Elamart." Und ohne Johanna Zeit zu einer Versicherung ihres Tankes zu lassen, hatte Bidache eine tiefe Verbeugung ge macht und das Zimmer verlassen. 11. Jeden Morgen schritt der Kassierer Herr Raveneau fünf Minuten vor neun Uhr. bei schönem, wie bei schlechtem Wetter um die Ecke der Victoirestraße, kaufte bei dem Bäcker an der Ecke der Chaussee d'Autin-Straße eine Semmel für zwei Sous und hing Schlag neun Uhr seinen Hut an den Kleiderrechen seiner Schreibstube. Heute aber hatte er sich zum ersten Male im Leben ver spätet, so daß er sich erst um zehn Uhr in seinem grünleder- neu Armstuhl niederließ. „War noch niemand hier?" fragte er mit einer gewissen Angst zu den Angestellten gewendet, die in dem gleichen Raume arbeiteten, wie?r. „Nein, Herr Raveneau, noch niemand", gab einer der selben zur Antwort. Raveneau trocknete sich die Stirne, die trotz der draußen herrschenden Kälte mit Schweiß bedeckt war, ließ sich dann vor seinem Arbeitstische nieder und versenkte sich in seine Zahlen. Sic tanzten und flimmerten aber unruhig vor seinen Augen, denn in Wirklichkeit dachte der arme Kassierer an
