1081 - 1030 - 18. Kapitel. Der Spätherbst war da — Borwinter hätte man es aennen können. Um die Wildeck Lrausle der kalte Nordsturm, ritz die letzten grauen verschrumpiien Blätter und alles dürre Gezweig oon den allen Bäumen und wirbelte es durch die Lüste. An die Fenster prasselten Negensaloen, denen Eiskörner den nötigen Nachdruck verliehen, um die Läden zu schließen und die Bitragen zuzuzichen. Hm Zimmer lag Rose matt und rchwach von kaum ubcrstandener Krankheit aus dem Sosa, mit warmer Decke über den Knien. Der Kops. an welchem das dichte, braune Haar kurz abgeschnitten lvar, lag still aus dem Kissen, die Hände schmal und mager aus der Decke. Ein niederer Schirm schützte sie vor dem Licht der Lampe, die überdem mit einem grünen Schleier bedeckt war. Am Tische saß Tante Ulrike und strickte an einem der grauen Röcke, mit denen zu Weih- »achten die alten Wciblein des Dorfes beglückt wurden. Die gute Tante sah be kümmert aus und blickte von Zeit zu Zeit verstohlen um die Schirinecke nach der regungs- losen Gestalt. Die Krankheit, an welcher sich daS »lind an einem rauhen Herbsttage ge legt hatte, war ,a längst vorüber, aber noch nicht überwunden. Es ivar keine Ursache mehr, die Diakonissin dazubehalten, welche Mechthild sofort als Pflegerin bestellt hatte — aber es war auch keine Möchrchkeit. das sauge Mädchen wieder aus seinen gewohnten Platz int Hause zu stellen. Es fehlte die Lebenssreudigkcit, die Kwast, gesund zu sein. Tante Ulrike übernahm die Pflege der Rekonvaleszentin, daS heißt, sie sag im Zimmer, hob die Decke auf. wenn sie herabslel, bereitete die stärkenden Getränke, fragte wohl zehn mal am Tage: „fühlst Du Dich besser. .Kindchen?" Und erhielt die stereotype Antwort: ..Ganz wohl, Tante." Es wurden Gehversuche gemacht, die mit Db» mach len endeten, and dann lag Rose wieder einen Tag im Bett, geduldig, müde und fast immer mit ge schlossenen Augen. Mechthild war während der ersten Wochen nicht ins Krankenzimmer gekommen. Es war Scharlach gewesen, den sich Rose bei einem Armenbcsuch im Dorfe durch An- Iteckung geholt liatte, und da Mechthild diese Krankheit noch nie gehabt 'hatte, besorgte Elans Bcrndt für sie eine Ansteckung. Sie selbst l-atte nicht die mindeste Furcht davor, hundertmal tvar sie un Dorf zu Kranken aller Art gegangen — doch in diesem Falle kam ihr die Besorgnis ihres Galten sehr gelegen. Rose war »alürlich unter der sachkundigen Pflege der „Schwester" am besten aufgehoben, und ihr blieb es erspart, die traurigen Augen des KmdeS immerwährend vor sich zu sehen. Mechthild war nervös geworden, iie tühlte sich überhaupt schlecht, überreizt, elend, und es kamen Stunden, in denen die plötzliche Angst vor einer verhängnisvollen Nervenkrisis sie packte. DaS sichere Bor- gesühl oon irgend ettvas Zchaudervollem. das die Zukunft für sie barg, kam dann mit sicher Gewalt über sie. daß sie sich in ihr Zimmer einjchloß. sich aus die Knie warf und zu beten versuchte, verzwenelt, in verworrener Augst, wie eine Sterbende, die ihr letztes Stündlei» nahen sül'lt und sich einer aus ihr lailenden Schuld bewußt wird . . . aber ihr war, als prallten ihre Gebete an verschlossenen .Himmelstoren ab, und ratlos, sich 'elbst unverständlich, preßte sie die Stirn in die verschlungenen Hände. Ein Unglück — aber was denn? Sollte Boy etwas geschehen? — Er war ihr erster Gedanke — aber auch an ihm konnten ihre Vorstellungen nicht lasten bleiben, sie suchten weiter, quälten sich ob und schweiften ins Unendliche. Erschreckende. Was war mit ihr? Wohin trieb sie? Nach solch einem Parorisinus trachtete sie dem liebende» Galten ans dem Wege zu gehen, bis die Spuren der Aufregung verwischt waren. Daß nur er nichts merkte von diesen seelischen Kämpfen, dieser liefen Gemiilsdeprossion! - Warum nicht? Auch daraus fand sie keine Antwort! Es wäre doch so natürlich gewesen, ihm alles zu sagen und zu klagen. Aber sie konnte »ich!. Ibr war immer, als habe sie ein entsetzliches Geheimnis zu hüten — jenes grobe Unglück, das auf sie alle lauerte, wofür sie keinen Nomen kannte. ElauS Berndt sah genug, um für sie eine ernstliche Erkrankung zu befürchte». Ihr Anblick erschreckte ihn manchmal geradezu. Sie hatte Tage, an denen ihre blühenden Farben einer sonderbaren fahlen Blässe Platz machten und ihre Augen in fieberndem Glanze fast irre blickten. Da sie jede Frage nach ihrem Befinden schroff zurückwics — sich selbst im Wesen immer unähnlicher werdend —, fragte er ohne ihr Wissen den alten, langjährigen Hausarzt um Rat. Die er, der die beiden nur als Muster robuster Gesund- l»eit kannte, kam am nächsten Tage, um unter der Firma eines sreuudschasklichen Besuches die Schloßsrau zu beobachten — aber Mechthild empfing ihn mit all ihrer gewöhnten liebenswürdigen Güte — dieser beflissenen Herzlichkeit, die ihr im Verkehr mit allem, was zur Wildeck gehörte, zur zweiten Natur geworden.. Sie iah so vorzüglich aus und vlaudene so heiler, daß er nachher zum Majoratsherrn sagte, cs könne sich nur um eine momentane Indisposition gehandelt haben. Die Nachricht von der Verlobung ihres Bruders Guntner mit Fräulein Lolli Brückner erregte als erste Empfindung Erleichterung. So kommt das Kind aus dem einfachsten Wege aus dem Hause, und sie ist dieser Sorge ledig. Oberst Buchen halte di- Tatsache brieflich, mrt lakonischer Kürze augezeigt, das Wort „Manöverbekaniilschafl" bildete die einzige Erklärung. Bald nachher erkrankte Roie und nahm die Tatsache, daß >e «ine Etirfmutter bekommen Hab«, mit hinein in ihre Fieberyhantasir». Ein« über stürzte. törichte Wohl — dessen konnte n»an versichert sem. es hatte Günther ja nicht ähnlich gesehen, vernünftig zu wählen. Auch verdroß «S Mechthild, daß di« Braut vürger- ltch tvar - die Buch«ns waren immer odelsstoiz geroesen Mlt wem wurde man da nun alles verwandt? Domänenrats — das wollte nichts sagen, klotzig reich vermutlich — und Lolli? - «in Backfisch also, den» sonst hätte wohl Charlotte dagestanden . .. t» «ine entsetzliche Idee, der grauhaarige Mann hat sich von einer jungen, unternehmungs- lustigen Person, die gerne Frau Oberst von Buchen werde» will, sangen lassen. Er war iuuner wehrlos hübschen Frauenzimmern gegenüber . . . Bon diesen Gesprächen hörte Rose genug, um ihr ohnehin verängstigte» Her» noch schwerer zu mocheu. Auch vom Inhalt der Briese, tue Ich e Iran Elise rn dieser Zelt der strengen Quarantäne au die Tante schrieb, sickerte genug durch, um in ihr bange Zweifel an der Erträglichkeit ihrkr ferneren Zukunft auskommen zu lassen. Wie sie jetzt mit geschlossenen Augen dalaa, scheinbar schlafend, flatterten ihr« Gedanken bang« umher, gleich malten Vögeln, und suchten vergeblich die Klarheit und das golden« Licht wieder» darin sie einst gelebt hatten. Mechthild kam jetzt jeden Tag. also auch heute, gegen abend, um nach der Nicht« zu sehe». Elans Berndt hätte sich letzt, wo die Ansteckungsgefahr vorüber war, gewun dert, wenn sie es nicht getan hätte. Es waren anfangs unerauickliche Augenblicke ae- wesen, bis Rose cS lernte, jedesmal die Augen zu schließen, woraus sich dann dieser Psliqt- besuch aus eine geflüsterte Unterhaltung mit der Tante beschränkte. „Immer wieder so matt? — Gabst D» ihr Ehinawein? Es muß doch mal besser werden. Das einzig Gut« dabei ist. daß wir alle nun nicht zu dieser .Hochzeit zu reise» brauchen. Lies hier Günthers Karte. Jawohl, in acht Tagen schon. Was hat Dir Elise Neues geschrieben?" „Sie hat in Erfahrung gebracht, daß eS die schrecklichsten Geldprotzen sind und schrecklich un gebildet. Du weißt. Elisens Verwandte haben auch ein Gut in der Mark. Ein Offizier, der erst bei diesem Domänenpächter in Quartier gelegen, l-at den Almosers dann erzählt, es sei das reine Schlaraffenland gewesen, der Sekl in Strömen geflossen und so weiter. Elise schreibt, die Schwiegermutter sei in Wittelsberg gewesen — Wohnung aus-sucken und einrichteu fürs Paar — eine der elegantesten Billen vor der Stadl, schrecklich luxuriös, nichts soll ihr gut genug gewesen sein sür die Tochter. Elise bedauert nur, daß sie sic nicht zu sehen gekriegt hat, sie hätte ihr gern gesagt, daß es ein Unsinn ist, wenn der Kommandeur dem Regiment mit svbaritischeni Luxus vorangeht . . . ach, und Ulrike . . . sie hatte ja doch noch immer gehofft ... es wäre so Passend gewesen." Hier wurde Mechthild ungeduldig. Sie hatte sich die unglückliche Nike nie zur Schwägerin gewünscht und sagte, sie wünsche sie Rose nicht als Stiefmutter. Dies Wort siel jedesmal erkältend und schmerzhaft iu das Ohr des Mädchens. Rose hatte in ihrer einsamen Kindheit zu viel Märchen gelesen, um nicht mit diesem Wort «ine dunkle, feind liche Vorstellung zu verbinden. Sie sah daher dem Kommenden illusionslos, mit Er gebung entgegen. Einsamer wie hier, unvcrsiandencr und verschüchterter kann sie sich in de:» neuen Zuhause ja auch nicht fühlen, und es ist außerdem auch sür sie eine Lösung der gualvolleii Frage, wohin nun? — Hierbleiben ist unmöglich, alles in ihr lehnt sich dagegen ans. Ihre Gedanken hatten seit so lange »ach einem Ausweg gesucht — nun war er da. Und wenn die Stiefmutter jung, uergirügiingssuchtig und eitel war und ihr im Hause eine Aschenbrödelrolle znwics, so wollte sie gern ihre Aschenbrödelpslichten er füllen und im Schatten stehen — es war alles erträglicher wie hier, in Boys Eltern- hciuse, weitem zu leben. Fa. Boy. Eine schreckliche Oede und Leere erfüllte sie bei dem Gedanken an ihn. Er batte ihr, seit er fort war. einmal geschrieben, mit einem erneuten Anlauf, ganz nnbesaiigen zu sein, so zu tun, als sei sie ein dummes, kleines Kind, dessen Launen nie mand ernst nimmt. Sie hatte den Brief verbrannt und nicht beantwortet. Von dem Tage au. wo sie täglich an die frische Lust gebracht wurde, begann Rose sich zu kräf tigen. Sie konnte sogar einige ihrer häuslichen Beschäftigungen wieder übernehmen, pflegte die Blumen »r den Fenstern und saß mit einer leichten Näharbeit in Tante Ulrikens Zimmer. Aber oon einer Reise zur Hochzeit war gar nicht mehr die Rede. Am Hochzeitstag aß sie znm erstenmal wieder mit unten, und Claus Berndt brachte die Gesundheit des Paares ans und sagte, er habe telegraphiert, und versuchte dem armen blassen Kinde so viel srenndliches Mitleid znznwenden. wie er nur übrig hatte — aber all sein Sorgen und Denken war durch den beunruhigenden Seelenzusiand seiner Frau in Anspruch genommen. Nacb dem Essen saß man im anstoßenden großen Familienzimmer, mit den dies ausgebuchteteu Fensiern und dem anstoßenden Erkerzimmcrchen. in welchem die uralte Uhr so surrend und singend zu schlagen pflegte.
