Wegnahme eine- bewaffneten englischen Dampfers. Berlin. (Amtlich.) Am 27. Juli. 1 Uhr vormittags, hat ein deutscher Hilfskreuzer 16 Seemeilen südöstlich von Arendal den bewaffneten englischen Dampfer „Es- k«mo" nach Gefecht genommen. Der Dampfer Ist cin- gebracht. s-lrendal liegt an der sübnorwcgischen Allste. - D. R.) Deutsches Todesurteil gegen eine« englischen Kapitän. Berlin. sAmtli ch.s Am 27. Juli fand in Brügge die Verhandlung des Feldgerichts des Marinekorps gegen den Kapitän Charles Fryatt von dem als Prise ein- gebrachten englischen Dampfer „Brüssels" statt. Der An geklagte wurde zum Tode verurteilt, weil er, ob wohl nicht Angehöriger der bewaffneten Macht, den Versuch gemacht hat. am 2g. Mürz 1915, um 2 Uhr 80 Min. nach mittags. bei dem Maasscuerschiffe das deutsche Untersee- b o o t ,,U. 3 8" z u r a m m e n. Der Angeklagte hatte ebenso wie der erste Offizier und der leitende Maschinist -es Dampfers seinerzeit für sein tapferes Verhalten bei dieser Gelegenheit von der britischen Admiralität eine goldene Uhr als Belohnung erhalten und war im Unterhause lobend er wähnt worden. Bei der damaligen Begegnung hat er, ohne sich um die Signale des Unterseebootes, das ihn zum Zeigen seiner Nationalflagge und zum Stoppen aufforocrte, zu kümmern. >m entschelbenbcn Augenblicke mit hoher Fahrt auf bas Unterseeboot zugedrcht. das nur durch soforti ges Tauchen um wenige Meter von dem Dampfer freikam. Er gab zu. hiermit nach den Weisungen der Ad- miralttät gehandelt zu haben. Das Urteil ist be stätigt und am 27. Juli nachmittags durch Erschießen vollstreckt worden. Eine von den vielen ruchlosen Frankttreurhandlungcn der englischen HanüclSschisfahrt gegen unsere KrlegSsahrzeuge hat so eine zwar späte, aber gerechte Sühne gefunden. lW. T. B.) Was unsere Feinde vom zweite« KriegSjahr erwarteten. Als die Welt in das zweite Kriegsjahr eintrat, stand es mit der Stimmung tm Lager der Entente nicht zum besten. Die große russische Dtzmpfwalzc, die Ende 1914 Deutschland zermalmen solttc, war gründlich festgefahren: während man tm Herbst 1914 triumphierend den bevorstehenden Fall von Königsberg und Breslau gemeldet hatte, standen jetzt die Deutschen in Galizien und vor den Toren von Warschau. Die Zeitungsartikel, mit denen man das zweite Kricgsjahr begrüßte, und die offiziellen Kundgebungen der leitenden Staatsmänner klangen unter diesen Umständen ein wenig gedrückt. Aber bald hob sich die Stimmung wieder. Wenn man auch den Fchlschlag der Entente-Anstrengungen im ersten Kriegsjahrc nicht wohl verschleierst konnte, so hoffte man doch um so bestimmter von dein zweiten Jahre die Erreichung des heiß ersehnten Ziels, die völlige Zer schmetterung Deutschlands. Mochten die deutschen und österreichischen Heere auch schon tief in Polen und Wol hynien stehen, so klammerte sich gerade hieran neue Hoff nung auf den Sieg, denn auch Napoleon war ja tief in das Innere Rußlands cingcdrungcn und hatte dort sein Schicksal gefunden. In allen Zeitungen der Entente wies man deshalb immer wieder auf den angeblichen Plan des Großfürsten Nikolaus hin. die Deutschen möglichst weit in das Innere Rußlands zu locken und dort in dem Eise des russischen Winters und den Flammen brennender Städte völlig zu vernichte». Bald sprach man von der „langsamen und totbringenden Anziehung des russischen Rückzuges (Journal des DsbatS" vom 1. 8.)", bald malte man sich fabelhafte Ziffern von deutschen Verlusten aus unü. war fest davon überzeugt, daß die Heere Ser Zcntralmächte aus dem polnischen Feldzuge verhängnisvoll geschwächt, ja ge radezu verkrüppelt hervorgehen würden «„Birmingham Daily Post" vom 3. 8.j. Selbst ein so kühler und sachlicher Beurteiler der Dinge wie Kitchcner erklärte am 16. 9. im Oberhaus, daß die Deutschen auf der Ostfront fast ihren letzten Pfeil verschossen zu haben schienen. Und je mehr man sich die Deutschen hungernd, frierend und von russischen Kugeln dezimiert an der Ostfront festge halten vorstcllte, desto stärker trat im Herbst 1916 der Ge danke hervor, durch eine gemeinsame Offensive auf alle» Kriegsschauplätzen zugleich der deutschen Armee den Gnadenstoß zu geben. Wie immer im Lager der Entente, nahm man auch hier sofort die Absicht für die Tat und schwelgte in rauschenden Phantasien, die sich heute wie grau same Ironie lesen. Frohlockend ruft Henry Bidou im „Journal des Debats" vom 1. 8. aus: Italien ersteigt in großartigem Vorgehen den Karst!, triumphierend prophe zeite der „Radical" vom 26. 7., daß Italiener und Serben nach Wien und Berlin marschieren. Am 81. 10. entwarf General Mallcterrc im „Tcmps" ein farbenprächtiges Zu kunftsbild: auf dem Balkan sind die Verbündeten im Be griff, Konstantinovel zu nehmen; und unmittelbar nach diesem erste» entscheidenden Ereignis werden die Dinge auf allen Kriegsschauplätzen in Gang kommen. Schon ist die deutsche Front im Osten empfindlich geschwächt, einem neuen Winterfeldzug wird sie nicht gewachsen sein. Ist erst Konstantinopcl gefallen, dann dringen die Russen über die Weichsel, und die siegreichen Heere der Franzosen über schreiten den Rhein. Und um die geschichtliche Ironie voll zu machen, verkündet ans englischer Seite Oberst Monde in der „Sunday Times" vom 1. 8., daß die Engländer nun mehr in steigendem Matze das Uebcrgcwicht im Luftkriege gewonnen haben; die Beherrschung der Lust wird in Zu kunft ein ebenso wichtiger Faktor der englischen Politik sein, wie Englands unbestrittenes Uebergewicht zur See. e weniger die tatsächlichen Erfolge der Entente znm rtumphiercn Anlaß gaben, um so ausschweifender wurden die phantastischen Hoffnungen, mit denen man der nächsten großen Offensive entgrgensah. Die russische Zeitung „Swjct" brachte am 1. 8. ein phantastisches Gemälde, wie die Deutschen in diesem Kriege langsam aber sicher zu Grunde gingen, die Verbündeten dagegen erst jetzt begännen, ihre Kräfte ruhig zu entwickeln, wie die unerschöpflichen Men- schcnmasscn Rußlands und die Millioncnarmce der eng lischen Freiwilligen sich vorbereiteten, Deutschland den Gnadenstoß zu geben. „Die letzten krampfhaften Zuckungen Deutschlands, um jeden Preis einen wenigstens einiger maßen anständigen Frieden zu erlangen, scheitern an dem festen Entschluß der Verbündeten, den Krieg bis zu seinem folgerichtigen SchlWe, der endgültigen und völligen Ver nichtung Deutschlands, zu führen. Diese Stunde ist nabe, die Anstrengungen unserer heldenhaften Truppen sind nicht vergebens gewesen." Mit diesen auSsch weisenden Hoffnungen ging man dem Herb st seid zng entgegen, der Deutschland vollends zer schmettern sollte. Die „sterbenden" Mittelmächte antworteten zu nächst mit der Eroberung von Serbien und Montenegro und mit der Vertreibung der Entcntctruppen von Galli- poli. Als das Jahr von Deutschlands „Zerschmetterung" zu Ende ging, rollten die ersten deutschen Eisenbahnzüge von Berlin nach Konstantinovel. Schon damals begann sich SaS Schicksal Townstzends zu erfüllen. Die Entente hatte dem gegenüber nur den „Sieg" von LooS und Tahure zn buchen, wo die große, mit unendlichem Munitions- und Tintcnvcrbrauch angekündtgte Zerschmetterung Deutsch- landS znr Eroberung einiger französischer Dörfer geführt hatte. Mit welchen Erwartungen die Entente dieser großen Offensive des September 1916 entgcgcngeschcn hatte, ergibt sich daraus, daß der Kommandeur der engli schen Garde-Division seine Truppen „am Vorabend der größten Schlacht aller Zeiten" zum entscheidenden Stoße beglückwünschte, „von dem das Schicksal kommender eng lischer Generationen abhinge"! ES sollte wirklich der ent scheidende Durchbruch sein, der die Deutschen aus Nord srankreich und Belgien hinauswcrfcn sollte; hatten die Verbündeten doch dazu eine Truppenmasse angcsetzt, die fast so groß war, wie das gesamte deutsche Heer, das im Jahre 1870 in Frankreich gefochtcn hatte. Trotz aller An strengungen war die Zerschmetterung Deutschlands im Jahre 1916 mißglückt. Sie mußte daher auf das folgende Jahr verschoben werden. Es wurde der Ententcpresse schwer, noch so vielen hochtönenden Reden sich mit einem derartigen mageren Ergebnis zu begnügen; aber gegen Ende des vergangenen Jahres hatte man den alten Gleich mut wiedergefunden und prophezeite aufs neue die Zer- schmetterung Deutschlands — diesmal im Jahre 1916. Zum Jahreswechsel 1916/16 schrieb der französische Ministerpräsident Briand an die „New Bork World": „Deutschland und seine Verbündeten bestreben sich mit der Verzweiflung einer in die Enge getriebenen Ratte, das un vermeidliche Schicksal aufzuschicben. Aber 1916 ist für die Entente eine Periode gewesen, wo sie sich an die neuen und unerwarteten Bedingungen der Kriegführung anpasscn maßte, eine Periode harter Arbeit, intensiver Organisation und der Vorbereitungen zum Siege; das Jahr 1916 geht auf, glänzend und voll Versprechungen, daß wir den Lohn unserer Anstrengungen ernte» werden!" Briand steht mit dieser Hoffnung nicht allein. Seit dem Anfang Juli 1916 die große Offensive im Westen zu gleich mit einer russischen Ossensive voll unerhörter .Kraft anspannung im Osten begonnen hat, sind die Hoffnungen der Entente bereits inS Unendliche gestiegen. Schon über bieten sich der Abbe Wctterle (nach „Etoilc de l'Est" vom 5. 7.j und „Financial News" vom 10. 7. in dem Gedanken an phantastische Kriegsentschädigungen, die Deutschland zu zahlen haben werde. Wctterle belegt als Pfand bereits alle deutschen Eisenbahnen, Bergwerke, Domänen, Schiffs werften, die Kriegsmarine, die Handelsflotte, die deutschen Museen und den persönlichen Besitz des Kaisers, während die englische Finanzpythia uns nur einen Jahrcstribut von 8 Milliarden Mark anferlcgt. Aber in auffallendem Gegen satz dazu stehen doch schon jetzt gelegentliche englische Stim men, die zur Mäßigung mahnen. Wer England kennt, wird darin gewiß kein Zeichen freiwilliger Großmut sehen, sondern nur das ungern abgegebene Geständnis, daß die Nieöerschmettcrnng Deutschlands doch nicht ganz so einfach ist. Trotz aller Siegesfanfarcn scheint die Entente denn auch nicht mehr in demselben Grade des EndcrfolgeS sicher zu sein wie noch vor einem Jahre. Am Ende des ersten Kriegsjahres schrieb das „Journal des Debats" vom 1. 8. von den deutschen Siegen: „ES isi der Todcskampf Fasners, der noch gefährlich ist, gber cs ist der Todcskampf." Wir kennen die Geschichte vom „deut schen Todeskauwf". Sie ist in der Vergangenheit, ,m Siebenjährigen Kriege und in der Napolconzeit gar manches Mal erzählt worden, auch Anfang 1870 war sic nicht ganz verstummt. In diesem Kriege sollte sie dann endgültig zur Wirklichkeit werden. Sie hat all unsere Siege von Anfang an in der öffentlichen Meinung des Auslandes anslöschen sollen. Als die Marneschlacstt ge schlagen war, da bot Deutschland bereits seine letzten Mann schaften. seine letzte Munition auf, da begingen deutsche Heerführer Selbstmord, da drohte in allen deutschen Städten die Revolution. Dann verblutete sich Deutschland zinn zweite» Mal in den polnischen Ebenen, war aber schließlich dock imstande, sich noch einmal zu erholen — zum dritten Todeskampfc bei Verdun. Nun ist der vierte Todcskamvs Deutschlands in der Umklammerung durch die große Ententeoffensivc angebrochen, aber Deutschland wird zum vierten Male von der geduldigen Welt papierener Träume an die harte Realität der Tatsachen appellieren. Wir halten durch und werden siegen!" Der deutsche Mannschaftsersatz. Gegenüber den Behauptungen unserer Feinde, daß Deutschlands Menschenzahl und Mann schaftsersatz nicht ausreichend sein werde, um dauernd die Lücken anszuiüllcn, die der unausgesetzte Kampf an drci oder vier Fronten mit sich bringe, kann die „Voss. Zig." ans Grund amtlicher Angaben miitcilcu, daß unser Mann- schastScrsah keinerlei Schwierigkeiten bereite. Die deutsche Heeresleitung habe noch nicht auf die Jahr gänge 1898 und 1899 zurUckzugrciscn brauchen. Die Ersatz bataillone und die NckrutenLepotö würden dauernd aul dem vollen Stand erhalten. Außerdem seien im Interesse der Aufrechterhaltung des Wirtschaftslebens Hnndert- iauscnöc vom Heeresdienst zurückgestcllt, die im Notfälle herangczogen werden könnten. <W. T. Ä.) Die Wahrheit bohrt sich durch. Nach einem Telegramm eines Berliner Blattes aus Lugano melden italienische Blätter „voller Entrüstung", baß cs seit einiger Zeit unmöglich geworden sei, die Heeres berichte General Cadornas auf radio-telegraphischem Wege zu versenden, da die deutschen Funkensprüchc alle anderen übcrtöncn. Die deutsche Station sei so määsiig geworden, Saß sie, wenn auch nicht gerade die Station des Eiffelturmes, so doch die Station Eol Tano völlig ausschalte. So komme cs, daß statt italienischer und anderer Ententcnachrichtcn die Berichte des deutschen G e n c r a l st a b e S die Weltmeere und die fremden Weltteile überschwemm ten. «W. T. B.)
