Neben den andern Neuerungen auf dem Gebiete des Sehmaschinenwesens — der Multimagazin-Lino type, der Stringertype und den verbesserten Modellen der Monotype — wurde diese einfache und doch sehr beachtens werte Erfindung von der Fachwelt meist mit einer kurzen Er wähnung abgetan. Obwohl die Zahl der den Typographstand belagernden Ausstellungsbesucher fast alltäglich groß war, blieben längere Aufsätze oder Besprechungen dieser Neuerung in der Fachpresse aus. Oie Interessenten und Fachschriststeller stürzten sich auf die Multimagazin-Linotype oder Stringer type und streiften nur so nebenbei das „Universal"-Modell des Typograph. Oie das letztere Sehmaschinensystem fabri zierende Fabrik hätte allerdings etwas mehr Reklame ent falten sollen. Oie mit dem Ausbruch des Krieges einsehende katastrophale Geschäfisflaue und riesige Arbeitslosigkeit im ge samten graphischen Gewerbe verursachte neben andern un liebsamen Begleiterscheinungen auch ein Abflauen des Inter esses für die Neuerungen auf dem Setzmaschinengebiete. Zu dem wandten sich die zwei in Betracht kommenden Fabriken der gewinnbringenderen und lohnenderen Munitions- und Heereslieferung zu. Oie Abteilungen für den Sehmaschinen bau wurden auf das möglichste reduziert. Auch dieVerbesserung und Vervollkommnung der neuausgestellten Modelle über ließ man der Zukunft. Das soll uns aber keineswegs davon abhalten, wenigstens eine der auf der Ausstellung vorgeführten neuen Maschinen einer eingehenden Betrachtung in bezug auf Verwendungs fähigkeit und Brauchbarkeit zu unterziehen. Wenn auch nur einige wenige „Universal"-Modellmaschinen während der drei jährigen Kriegsdauer aufgestellt worden find, so bieten die gesammelten Erfahrungen einem aufmerksamen Fachmann genügend Material, um ein unparteiisches Urteil fällen zu können. Und das kann nur dahin lauten, daß dieWerkdruckereien durch die Anschaffung des „Universal"-Typograph oder auch nur des Oberteils (Korbes) desselben in die Lage versetzt sind, jegliche Korrekturen, kleine Schiebungen usw. von Zeilenguß- sah auf einfache und billige Weise schnell und ohne großen vorhergehenden Zeitaufwand zu erledigen. Wer in größeren, mit Zeilensetzmaschinen arbeitenden und sich hauptsächlich mit der Herstellung von Büchern und Werken befassenden Lohn druckereien beschäftigt war, wird wohl die Erfahrung gemacht haben, daß die Rentabilität der Maschinen durch den sehr oft vorkommenden Format- und Schriftwechsel bei Erledigung von Haus- und Verfasserkorrekturen,Maschinenrevisionen usw. bedeutend vermindert wird. Meist sind die Matrizen jenes Schristcharakters, mit dem das betreffende Werk gesetzt wurde, ausgehängt und befinden sich entweder im Matrizenkasten oder hängen auf dem Ständer. Iede modern eingerichtete Werkdruckerei ist aber gezwungen, mit einer größeren Anzahl Antiqua- und Frakturschriften zu arbeiten. Nur in ganz seltenen Fällen trifft es jedoch zu, daß mit einem Matrizensatz mehrere Werke hintereinander abgeseht werden können. Die Wünsche der Verleger und Auftraggeber sind verschieden und uner gründlich. Kaum ist z. B. ein Werk aus der Offenbacher Schwabacher beendet, so sind die Matrizen schleunigst umzu hängen, da das nächste aus der Breitkopf- oder Schulfraktur gesetzt werden soll. Selbstverständlich jagt ein Schnellschuß den andern, und alles soll mit der nötigen Geschwindigkeit erledigt werden. Kommen dann die dem Verfasser oder Ver leger gesandten Abzüge—meist mitÄnderungen,Streichungen, Zusätzen, Korrekturen usw. versehen - zurück, so heißt es- Format- und Schriftwechsel vornehmen, Messer stellen, Aus schluß- und Pumpenfeder Nachlassen oder anziehen und was derlei Annehmlichkeiten noch mehr sind. Ost muß wegen zwei oder drei Zeilen - hauptsächlich bei Maschinenrevisionen -, man könnte sagen, beinahe die ganze Setzmaschine verstellt werden. Eine Arbeit, die nicht nur sehr zeitraubend ist, das Werk verteuert und große Anforderungen an die Geduld des übernervösen Maschinensetzers stellt, sondern oft auch die Rentabilität der Sehmaschinenabteilung in Frage stellt. Viele Firmen schafften tzch deshalb Handsahtypen an, die in Bild und Eharakter der Maschinensatzschrist genau entsprachen. (Für Besitzer von Typographmaschinen werden solche von Wöllmers Schriftgießerei, Berlin, geliefert.) Dadurch ersparte man dasSchrifiumhängenundFormatwechseln,indem kleinere Schiebungen, geringe Haus-und Verfasserkorrekturen und be schädigte Zeilen (bei Maschinenrevisionen) vom Handsetzer gesetzt und zwischen die kompakten Maschinenzeiten hinein geschoben wurden. Aber auch das hatte seine Nachteile: Bei größeren Auflagen litten die Handsatztypen zu sehr und stachen nach kurzem Gebrauch gegenüber den stets neuen und scharf ausgegossenen Maschinenzeiten ab,- auch gab'S bei schwach ausgeschlossenen Zeilen stets Spieße, unter Umständen wurden gar einzelne Buchstaben von den Auftragwalzen erfaßt und herausgezogen, gerieten auf die Druckform — und statt des erhofften Vorteils hatte man neuen Ärger und Verdruß. Nicht jede Firma konnte sich aber die Anschaffung eines oder mehrerer Reservekörbe leisten. Diese Apparate kosteten einen tüchtigen Batzen Geld, nahmen den manchmal so kost baren Raum weg und stellten im Grunde genommen ein totes Kapital dar. Für jeden Matrizensah konnte man schließ lich auch nicht gleich einen Reservekorb mitbesiellen. Zudem war das Korbwechseln keine besonders angenehme Sache: dazu waren erstens zwei (nicht zu schwache) Männer erforder lich und außerdem mußten sechs Schrauben los- und wieder angeschraubt werden. All diese Schwierigkeiten werden für die mit „Universal"- Typographmaschinen arbeitenden Werkdruckereien künftig un bekannte Dinge sein- Der Schriftwechsel läßt sich an diesem Modell innerhalb weniger Minuten durch eine Person bewerkstelligen. Der Korb ist so konstruiert, daß die Matrizen nicht mehr — wie beim und K-Modell — einzeln herausgehängt zu
