Journ.*) Der Bericht deS SecretärS der amerikanischen Eisen- und Stahlfabrikatiou giebt eine Uebersicht über die Entwickelung deS EisengeschäfteS im Jahre 1883 uud bemerkt, daß der Preis von Stahl uud Eisen in diesem Jahre den niedrigsten Punkt erreicht habe. Viele Walz werke und Stahlfabriken hätten ihre Oefen ge löscht, weil die Eigruthümer der Ansicht seien, daß für die nächste Zukunft keine Hoffnung auf eiue Besserung der Verhältnisse vorhanden sei. Die Red. Dresden, 3. Januar. In Paris ist kürzlich unter dem Namen „^.1- liaues tran^ais»" ein Verein gegründet worden, welcher sich die Aufgabe stellt, „durch Verbreitung der französischen Sprache in den Colonien und im Aus lande Sympathien für Frankreich und dessen Einfluß zu erwecken." Das Programm gipfelt in 3 Haupt punkten: 1) Verbreitung der Kenntniß der französischen Sprache in den Colonien und den unter französischem Protectorate stehenden Ländern, da diese Art der Pro paganda das beste Mittel ist, die Eingeborenen zu ge winnen, sociale und commerzielle Beziehungen einzu leiten und in überseeischen Ländern auf dem Wege friedlicher Errungenschaften der französischen Race, deren Wachstum auf dem Continent ein unzureichen der ist, Weiterentwickelung zu erleichtern (proIonier la rao« traus,Lise); 2) Unterstützung der französischen Missionäre aller Culte oder französischer Privatlehrer in den der Civilisation noch fernstehenden Ländern zum Zwecke der Gründung und Unterhaltung von Schulen, in weichen französisch gelehrt wird; 3) Ein leitung von Verbindungen mit im Auslande con- stituirteu französischen Kreisen, um unter ihnen die Pflege der nationalen Sprache anzuregen. Aus dem Aufrufe des Gründungscomitös geht hervor, daß es die Erfolge der englischen Sprache sind, welche den französischen Patrioten den Schlaf rauben. DaS Gebiet der Sprache Voltaire's und Moliere's nimmt an Umfang wenig zu, während das Gebiet der englischen Sprache jährlich sich erweitert und in kurzer Zeit über >00 Millionen Menschen umfassen wird. Man kann sogar mit Sicherheit behaupten, daß im Lause der Jahr Hunderte in Amerika, in Australien und in Indien vorwiegend, wenn auch vielleicht nicht ausschließlich, englisch gesprochen werden wird. Die Thatsache der außerordentlichen Verbreitung der englischen Sprache ist ein „redendes" Zeugniß für die große Cultur- mission des englischen Volkes. T)ie Kenntniß der englischen Sprache geht weit über die Gren zen der englischen Besitzungen hinaus, und in ähnlicher Weise erlangte unsere deutsche Sprache, ohne daß wir jemals zu den erobernden oder Colo nien gründenden Völkern gehört hätten, im Osten Europas ein weites Gebiet. Nächst der englischen Sprache hat die auf der Hälfte des amerikanischen Festlandes gesprochene spanische Sprache in der neuen Welt eine große Verbreitung gefunden, und ihre Be deutung geht weit über die Machtstellung Spaniens hinaus. Wenn die französische Sprache eine ähnliche Bedeutung als Weltsprache nicht erlangte, so ist die Ursache zweifellos darin zu suchen, daß die Franzosen iu überseeischen Ländern keine bleibenden Schöpfungen zu hinterlassen bestrebt waren. Ihr Auftreten in frem den Welttheilen beschränkte sich auf kurze Kriegs- und Eroberungszüge; aber nirgends gelang es ihnen, wie dies die Briten in Nordamerika und Australien voll brachten, eine nationalfranzösische Cultur zu begründen. Selbst das so zu sagen vor den Thoren Frankreich- gelegene Algerien hat die Unfähigkeit der französischen Natron, Colonien zu begründen, während eines nun mehr halbhundertjährigen Besitzes deutlich genug er wiesen. Im Uebrigen wird man gegen den in Paris ge gründeten Verein nichts einwenden können, wenn der selbe bei seiner Thätigkeit sich innerhalb der richtigen Grenzen zu halten weiß. Nicht unbemerkt ist es ge blieben, daß der Pariser Oberrabiner Zadoc Kahn die neue ,,^IIi»iic« tran^ni««" seinen Glaubensgenossen besonders warm empfohlen hat. Er schreibt nämlich an den „Gaulois": „Die französischen Israeliten be finden sich schon längst auf der Bahn, welche die ,,.4liianev krallyaias" einschlägt. Unsere „^Uianov israslit«^ hat längst in den verschiedenen Gebieten des Morgenlandes ungefähr 10<> Schulen gegründet, welche vortrefflich gedeihen und stets den Schutz der französischen Regierung genossen haben; denn diese Schulen arbeiten emsig an der Verbreitung der sran- zösischen Sprache und Bildung. Indem ich die „Uli- uoce ban^ai.»" empfehle, setze ich deshalb nur eine schon alte Tradition des französischen Judenthums fort." Die „Neue Preußische Zeitung" bemerkt hierzu: „Es ist eine eigenthümliche Sache um das „Vordrängeln"; Hr. Zadoc Kahn hat in diesem Falle zunächst nur er reicht, daß man sich im Auslande mit der neu gegrün deten „Kiliane» kraoyaise" und dann auch wieder einmal mit der seit 1860 bestehenden „^Uianee israelitb" etwas näher befassen wird, während gerade die letztere es sehr gut vertragen könnte, wenn Hinfort etwas weniger von ihr gesprochen würde. Hr. Zadoc Kahn stellt schlechterdings die Situation so dar, als ob die „^Uiaucs is-uviit«" ein im französischen Interesse arbeitendes Institut wäre, ohne zu bedenken, daß er dadurch unter Anderen auch die „deutsch-jüdi schen Patrioten", welche Mitglieder dieses Vereins sind, in einige Verlegenheit bringt. Also Hr. Zadoc Kahn empfiehlt die „LUmne« kritiiyai»«", um damit die israviit.«" zu empfehlen — oder auch umgekehrt, je nachdem. Nun wird aber die letztere sonst von jüdischer Seite immer als ein ganz harm loses Institut vorgeführt, welches sich lediglich die sittliche und intellektuelle Hebung der armen Glau bensgenossen in Rußland, im Orient und ander wärts zur Aufgabe gestellt habe — und zu diesem Beweiszwecke wird immer wieder auch aus die >00 jüdischen) Schulen, die man gegründet haben will, hingewiesen. Jene „unglücklichen und verstoßenen" Glaubensbrüder „zur vollen Menschenwürde wieder aufzurichten — ihre wahre geistige und moralische Emancipation durch Unterricht und Arbeit — das ist das eigenste Werk der Allianz, für welches sie ihre ganze Kraft eingesetzt hat", so sagt mit einem Hin weise auf jene Schulen der Statistiker Salomon Neu mann noch ganz kürzlich in einem nahezu 6 Spalten der „Volks-Zeitung" umfassenden Artikel „Die neueste Lüge über die israelitische Allianz". Und nun kommt Hr. Zadoc Kahn, der als Oberrabbiner in Paris doch etwas näher an der Werkstätte der „Kiliane,- irrnelitv" sitzt, und enthüllt der Welt das Geheimniß, daß die lo<> Schulen, von denen die Deutschland angehörigen Mitglieder immer so viel Aufhebens machen, „emsig an der Verbreitung der französischen Sprache und Bildung arbeiten" und dadurch, wie man wohl er gänzen muß, da Hr. Zadoc Rahn sich mit seiner Allianz schon längst aus der Lahn der neuen fran zösischen Allianz befinden will, „Sympathien für Frankreich und dessen Einfluß" Hervorrufen." Latzesgeschichte. * Berlin, 2. Januar. Gestern um ^12 Uhr nahm Se. Majestät der Kaiser die Gratulation de- gesammten königl. HofeS, welcher im Balconsaale zu sammengetreten war, entgegen. Um 12 Uhr hatten die activen und die zur Disposition stehenden Gene räle, die Obersten, welche sich in Generalsstellungen befinden und die Commandeure der Leibregimenter, welche bei dieser Gelegenheit die Monatsrapporte über reichten, die Ehre des Empfanges. Zugleich mit der Generalität erschienen der Kronprinz und die anderen königl. Prinzen noch einmal zur Gratulation. Von einer Ansprache an Se. Majestät den Kaiser, wie solche in früheren Jahren beim Empfange der Generalität von Seiten des Feldmarschalls Grafen Wrangel er folgte, war auch dies Mal wieder abgesehen worden. Der Kaiser sprach der Generalität gegenüber seine leb hafte Freude aus, daß es ihm vergönnt sei, sie am heutigen Tage empfangen zu können, und gab zugleich der Hoffnung Ausdruck, mit Gottes Hilfe dieselben auch im nächsten Jahre in gleicher Frische und Rüstig keit begrüßen zu können. — Eine Sitzung des Bun- desrathes wird, dem Vernehmen nach, in dieser Woche nicht stattfinden. - Anläßlich des gestrigen 50. Jah restags der Gründung des deutschen Zollvereins fand beim Finanz Minister ein Festdiner Statt, woran alle Minister, die preußischen und nichtpreußischen Mit glieder des Bundesrathes und andere hohe Reichs- und Staatsbeamte theilnahmen. Der Finanzminister hob in seiner Rede hervor, wie die materiellen Bedürfnisse des Volkes auf eine Versöhnung des deutschen Sonder geistes mit dem deutschen Einheitsgeiste hingedrängt hätten, wie die Gründung des Zollvereins die erste glückliche praktische Versöhnung beider Richtungen ge wesen sei, wie der Zollverein in dem neu entstandenen Reiche seine volle befriedigende Gestalt gesunden habe. Der Minister schloß mit dem dreifachen, begeistert aus genommenen Hoch auf den Kaiser, die deutschen Bun desfürsten und die freien Städte. — Die „Straßd. Post" berichtet heute über einen dem Statthalter Ge neralfeldmarschall Frhrn. v. Manteuffel von Sr. Majestät dem Kaiser zu Theil gewordenen Vertrauens beweis Folgendes: „Nach der bekannten Rede des Abg. Baron Hugo Zorn v. Bulach wandte sich der Statthalter mit der Anfrage an den Kaiser, ob Se. Majestät anläßlich dieses Vorkommnisses besonderen Bericht befehle. Die Antwort des Kaisers lautete da hin, daß ein Bericht nicht nothwendig erscheine, da der kaiserl. Statthalter sich des allerhöchsten Ver trauens nach wie vor in ungeschwächtem Maße er freue. Der Statthalter versammelte hierauf an zwei Abenden die Spitzen der Militär- und Civilbehörden an seiner Tafel und gab ihnen von dem Inhalt der ehrenden Kundgebung Kenntniß. So weit unsere Nachrichten. In Ansehung der Persönlichkeiten, denen wir sie verdanken, haben wir allen Grund, dieselben für richtig zu halten. Wenigstens insofern, als der allge meine Inhalt und der Zusammenhang in Frage kommt. Selbst für den Fall, daß die eine oder andere Einzel heit nicht ganz zutreffend sein sollte, liefern diese Mit- theilungen doch noch immer einen direkten Beweis für die Richtigkeit unserer Behauptung, daß alle auswär tigen Nachrichten über den angeblichen Rücktritt des Statthalters rc. der innern Begründung entbehren, da der Stellvertreter des Kaisers im Reichslande keinen Augenblick aufgehört hat, das Vertrauen des Monarchen im vollsten Umfange zu genießen." — Die „Els.-Lothr. Ztg." schreibt: Unter den vielen Glück wünschen, welche dem Statthalter am gestrigen Neu jahrstage von nah und fern zugegangen sind, verdient Feuilleton. Redigirt von Otto Banck. Mittwoch den 2. Januar fand im Saale des ,Hotel ae Saxe" das Conrert des Frl. Aglaja Orgeni und der Frau Margarethe Stern Statt. Die hoch- geschätzte Gesangskünstlerin Frl. Orgeni entfaltete wie derum ihre wohlbewährte Meisterschaft in Beherrschung und Verwendung ihrer Stimmmittel, in geistvoller, fein enipfundener Gestaltung des Vortrags und einer stilvollen Behandlung, wodurch virtuose Gesangstechnik erst wahrhaft künstlerische Vollendung erhält. Diesen Eindruck, welcher die wärmste Sympathie und den sich steigernden Beifall der Hörer erregte, empfingen wir ganz besonders durch ihre schöne Ausführung eines Arioso von Händel, einer melodiös entzückenden Anette Gluck s (aus dessen Oper renoontre iwprävuo"), durch ihren reizenden und virtuosen Vortrag der Lieder von Jensen („Murmelnde- Lüstchen") und der „l^socke r-e Iu üllv clu kana" au- „Lakms" von Delibes. Letzterer an capriciösen Schwierigkeiten reiche Gesang, der fast auf eine orientalisirte Dinorah deutet, war in Bezug auf die genannte Oper von besonderm Interesse. Frau Margarethe Stern bcthatigt in freier sicherer Beherrschung der Technik und Gestaltung des Vortrag» stets einen Fortschritt. Ihr Vortrag gewährte in allen ihren Ausführungen den Genuß einer musikalisch fein, mit vertiefter und poetischer Empfindung gestaltenden Auffassung, welche den reizenden und fesselnden Ein druck ihrer individuellen Wahrheit nicht durch Manie- rirtheit und virtuose Krasteffecte abschwächt. Rament lich hervorgehoben sei ihr vorzüglicher Vortrag der Chopin'schen Sonate in ihren schönen Mittelsätzen, der Mendelssohn'schen Vanut.ous deS Menuet von Bizet und des türkischen Marsches von Beethoven. Hr. Concertmeister Petri aus Leipzig vervollständigte das Programm noch durch einige Violinvorträge, Solo piecen von Bach, Sonate Tartini's, Sarabande und Tambourin von Leclair. Er bekundete sich dabei als ein recht tüchtiger, musikalisch geschulter Geiger, der indeß, um als Concertspicler Interesse zu erregen, sei nen künstlerischen Bestrebungen noch weitere Studien, namentlich auch hinsichtlich des Tones zumuthen muß. C. B. Benetiana. Novelltmiudie von M. Schwartz. (Fortsetzung) Dann kamen traurige Tage. Die madro war ihr mit Güte und Milde entgegengekommen nnd hatte auch der ganzen Schwesterjchaft empfohlen, das vornehme Weltkind, über dessen Eintritt ins Kloster man frohlockte, nicht zu verschüchtern. Maria wurde mit Auszeichnung behandelt und genoß alle Vorrechte ihres Standes Als sie aber erklärte, sie sei zwar aus Gehorsam jegen ihren Vater hierher gegangen und werde bleiben o lange er es für gut fände, aber den Schleier würde ie nun und nimmermehr nehmen — da wurde eS anders. Man versuchte zuerst alle nur erdenkliche Ueber redungSkunst, man wetteiferte in Liebesbeweisen und suchte ihr das Leben einer Klosterschwester so ver lockend wie möglich darzustellen: aber es war Alles vergeblich. Man stieß immer auf denselben sanften, aber festen Widerstand Und glaubte endlich genöthigt zu sein, andere Maßregeln zu ergreifen. Maria wurde in ihrer Freiheit beschränkt, die sie wenigstens inner halb der Klostermauern genossen hatte, sie fühlte sich beständig bewacht und beobachtet und mit tausend klein lichen Quälereien verfolgt. Ihr Vater, der sie lange nicht besucht hatte, weil er sich fürchtete, sie wieder zu sehen, die er in blindem Wahne und im starren Festhalten an einem Gelübde von sich gestoßen — ihr Vater wurde, als er endlich kam, abgewiesen, weil man sagte, Maria sei krank; eine Mittheilung, die dem alten Manne beinahe das Herz brach. Dabei ließ man ihr durchblicken und sagte es theilweise ganz offen, daß sie es selbst in der Hand habe, ihr Leben zu ändern, sobald sie den Schleier nehmen wolle. Aber Maria blieb fest. Und was gab dem zarten Mädchen die Kraft, das freudlose, ge quälte Dasein zu ertragen? Wie kam es. daß sie nicht gleichgiltig zu Allem „Ja" sagte, was man von ihr verlangte, wie es Hunderte vor ihr und nach ihr gethan haben, denen die Kraft erlahmte und die Hoff nung erstarb? Allabendlich, wenn die späte Dämmerung ihre Schleier niedersenkte und die Nebel aus den Lagunen stiegen, erklang eine Laute vor den Pforten des Klosters und eine schöne männliche Stimme sang eines jener weichen, melancholischen Lieder, die sich so tief ins Herz einschmeicheln und so unvergeßlich sind. Maria kannte die Stimme und wußte, wer das Lied sang, und allabendlich schien ihr eine Stimme zuzu- rusen: „Harre aus, Du bist nicht vergessen und nicht allein." Vergebens that man im Kloster Alles, um den Sänger zu vertreiben. Vergebens verlegte man die Zelle der schönen Maria von einem Flügel" deS Klosters zum andern. Die Lautenklänge wechselten stets die Stelle, und wenn man den Sänger greifen wollte, so war er nimmer da. Maria aber lauschte wie verklärt, oder sie lag vor ihrem Betpulte auf den Knien, ließ den Rosenkranz durch die zitternden Finger gleiten und verbarg ihre Thränen. So waren die Tage vergangen. Die Nächte wur den allmählich länger, die größte Hitze des Sommers war überstanden, man war am Herbste angekommen. Da schwiegen eines Abends die Lautenklänge, schwiegen auch die folgenden Tage, wie sehr sich auch Maria Kopf und Herz darüber zermarterte.
