Bon Meiner Marine wirksam unterstützt, haben diese Expedition«, eine Reihe für die Be obachtung jene» Phänomen besonder« wichtiger Stationen besetzt, da« eine Mal in dem Gebiete zwischen der chinesischen Küste, Persien und Aegypten einerseit« und den Grenzen de« südlichen Eismeere» anderrrseit«, da« andere Mal zwi schen dem Norden und der Südspitzt Amerika». Unter Ihrer umsichtigen und hingebrndrn Oberleitung ist r« gelungen, der deutschen Wissenschaft in hohem Maste Erfolg und Würdigung zu erringen aus einem Gebiete erdumsassender Veranstaltungen, aus welchem Deutschland in früherer Zeit bei gleichartigen Anlässen gegenüber den Leistungen anderer Nationen-itznrück- gestanden halte. Um so lebhafter ist da« Interesse gewesen, mit welchem Ich den diesmaligen Unternehmungen der deutschen Wissenschaft zur Beobachtung de« Phänomen» feit ihrem Beginne gefolgt bin; um so freudiger ist dir Benug- thuung, mit welcher Ich auf den ergebnistreichen Abfchlust derselt en blicke Indem Ich hierdurch Ihrem Berdienste um diesen Erfolg, sowie der gediegenen Mitwirkung Aller, welche zu solchem Gelingen beiget ragen haben, Meine Anerkennung zolle,' verbind« Ich damit gern Meinen Dank für die Hilse und Gastlichkeit, welche Unseren wissenschaftlichen Expeditionen in reichem Maste nicht nur von den ra der gerne lebenden Stammesgenosfen, sondern auch von vielen Angehörigen anderer Nationen erwiesen worden ist. Bad Em», den 4 Juli 1884. Wilhelm. An den geh. RegierungSrath Pros, vr Auwers, ständigen Secrelär der Akademie der Wissenschaften. — Ihre kaiserl. und königl. Hoheiten der Kron prinz und die Kronprinzessin empfingen gestern den Besuch Ihrer königl. Hoheit der Großherzogin von Mecklenburg - Strelitz, welche, von Strelitz kom mend, um l Uhr in Potsdam eintraf und nach einem im neuen PalaiS eingenommenen Luncheon die Reise nach Dresden fortsetzte. — Der kaiserl. deutsche Bot schafter am russischen Hofe, Generallieutenant und Generaladjutant » Schweinitz, trifft, nach der „Nordd. Allg. Ztg.", noch vor Ablauf dieser Woche aus St. Petersburg hier ein. Während seiner Abwesenheit von St. Petersburg wird der Botschafter v. Schwei nitz vom Botschaftsrath v. Bülow vertreten werden. Der Letztere war kürzlich, von Paris kommend, hier durch nach St. Petersburg gereist, hatte sich jedoch zuvor noch zum Reichskanzler nach Varzin begeben. — Der Bundesrath, die vereinigten Ausschüsse des selben sür das Seewesen und für Handel und Ver kehr, sowie die vereinigten Ausschüsse für Zoll- und Steuerwesen und für Rechnungswesen hielten heute Sitzungen. — Durch das Reichsamt des Innern sind im Laufe des heutigen Tages diejenigen Maßnahmen getroffen worden, welche von Seiten der Lholera- eommission behufs Abwehr der Ausbreitung der Cholera im deutschen Reiche in Vorschlag gebracht worden sind. Die vorbereitenden Schritte waren schon vor einiger Zeit geschehen, so daß beim Eintreffen des ersten Berichts des Geh. Raths l)r. Koch unver züglich vorgegangen werden konnte. In diesem von, ft. d. Mts. datirten Berichte erklärt der l>r. Koch, den „Berl. Pol. Nachr." zufolge, daß man es in Toulon unzweifelhaft mit der echten asiatischen Cholera zu thun habe, und daß, wenn Touloner Aerzte von einer mildern Form der Krankheit sprechen, dies wohl daher rühre, daß verschiedentlich starke Diarrhöen als Cho lera behandelt wurden. In Wirklichkeit trete die Seuche heftig auf und mache rapide Fortschritte. Koch erklärt, daß er bei seinen Untersuchungen in Toulon den Cholerabacillus auch gefunden habe. Wenn die Cholera bisher eine intensive Verbreitung in der Umgegend von Toulon nicht gesunden habe, so sei dies auf den gebirgigen Charakter dieser Um gebung zurückzuführen, welche auch bei früheren Choleraepidemien in Toulon weniger stark und rasch in Mitleidenschaft gezogen worden sei. Schließlich spricht Koch die Ueberzeugung aus, daß, nachdem man es in Toulon und Marseille unzweifelhaft mit der asiatischen Cholera zu thun habe, diese, entsprechend den bisher gemachten Erfahrungen sich auch über den europäischen Continent ausbreiten werde. Infolge dieses Berichtes sind seiten des Reichsamtes des Innern sofort die nothwendigen Schritte ge schehen, um die Bundesregierungen von dem Stande der Angelegenheit in Kenntniß zu setzen und dieselben zur Durchführung der für diesen Fall vorausgesehenen Maßregeln zu veranlassen. Es betreffen diese Maß regeln daL Revisionssystem, bez. die Untersuchung der aus dem Westen kommenden Eisenbahnzüge, Desinfec- tion, Einsetzung von Localcomites, welche die Aufgabe haben, die sanitären Zustände der einzelnen Orte zu prüfen, die Beobachtung der sanitätspolizeilichen Vor schriften zu überwachen, Einrichtung von Choleralaza rethstationen u. s. w Sperrmaßregeln sind nicht be absichtigt. Die diesbezüglichen Vorschriften werden unverweilt bekannt gemacht werden. — Unter Bezug nähme auf die von den Regierungen der Bundessee- „Nein," sagte Harold, „ich will selbst gehen." Er ließ sein Pferd in den Stall führen und ging durch die Halle nach den Garten. Aber er suchte sie vergebens, sowohl bei den Blumenbeeten, wie in den Laubgängen, in den Treibhäusern und im Küchengarten. Die Arbeiter, welche er fragte, hatten sie nicht gesehen. Dann ging er nach dem Flusse, und hier endlich sah er eine schlanke, ihm so wohlbekannte Gestalt, die bewegungslos, das Haupt etwas seitwärts geneigt, nachsinnend auf einem Felsblocke faß. Vorsichtig kam er näher. Ihr Hut, mit seiner reichen, weißen Feder, lag achtlos auf dem Boden, ihre Hände lagen müde, gefaltet in ihrem Schooße, und kleine Wellen kräuselten herauf bis zu ihren Füßen. In weiten Zügen zogen die Seemöven vor ihr hin und her, und in der düstern Landschäst, durch welche ein rothschornsteiniger Dampfer langsam see wärts ging, sahen die Berge drüben blaß und fern aus. Vergaß Harold je einen eiüzigen Zag dieses Bildes?! Er kam dicht an sie heran und nannte ihren Namen. Da sah sie sich um, als sei ein Traum erfüllt, den sie eben noch geträumt, mit großen Augen und glückseligem Gesicht, sich keine« andern Gedanken« al« nur dessen bewußt, daß Der, an den sie eben noch so schmerzlich gedacht hatte, lebendig und strahlenden AugeS vor ihr stand. „May!" rief er aus. Er empfand, wa« sie dachte, nahm ihre beiden Hände und im nächsten Augenblicke ruhte ihr Antlitz, ohne ein Wort, ohne Sträuben — gber feucht von Thränen an Harold « Brust. staaten betreff- der gesundheit-polizeilichen Controle der einen deutschen Hafen anlaitfenden See schiffe erlassenen Vorschriften bringt der Reichskanzler unterm 9. d. MtS. zur öffentlichen Kenntniß, daß die französischen Hafenplähe des Mittelmeers al« der Cholera verdächtig anzglsehen sind. Rüde-Heim, 8. Juli. Der erste Staatsanwalt des Landgerichts in Elberfeld, Lützeler, und der Land richter Schäfer in Begleitung eines GerichtsschMbers, eines zutzezogenen Geometer« und de« Gewogenen Rupsch, dieser unter Bedeckung eines Polizeimeisters aus Elberfeld, sowie mehrerer Sicherheitsbeamte be sichtigten am Sonnabend und Sonntag den Ort des beabsichtigten Attentats am Niederwalddenkmal und die Stelle hier unten bet Rüdesheim, wo aus dem vorjährigen Festplatze nachher noch jene kleine Explosion erfolgte, welche damals in dem Freudenlärm schier ungehört verhallte. Was der „Hamb.Corresp." über das Verbrechen selbst hört, ist Folgendes: Als der Plan gefaßt war, wurde Reinsdorfs mit der Ausführung desselben beauftragt. Er hatte nach jeder Richtung hin Vorbereitungen zu treffen und insbeson dere auch die ihm geeignet erscheinenden Leute aus den vom Executiveomit-i bezeichneten Persönlichkeiten auszuwählen. Nicht dem Denkmale galt der An schlag, auf den kaiserl. Zug war er berechnet. Eine Mine mußte gelegt werden an einer Stelle möglichst nahe dem Platze des Denkmals, am Wege, den der kaiserl. Zug zu passiren hatte, und doch weit genug ab, um unbemerkt von der Menge das Attentat voll führen zu können. Die Jubelrufe der Festtheilnehmer sollten kaum verhallt, der kaiserl. Train sich kaum in Bewegung gesetzt haben, da sollte das Schreckliche sich vollziehen. Wer die That verüben solle, überließ Reinsdorfs, nachdem er selbst alle Vorbereitungen ge troffen halte, dem Loos. Der Schriftsetzer Küchler und der Sattler Rupsch waren es, welchen die Auf gabe zufiel. Rupsch, welcher geständig ist, wurde spä ter in Naumburg verhaftet und ist nun in Elberfeld inhaftirt Ueberlistet von einem Beamten, hat der selbe alsbald ohne Umschweife vollends bekannt. Zn beiden Seiten der Fahrstraße zum Niederwaldc laufen Fußwege her, und nebrn dieseo, ebenfalls zu beiden Seiten liegen übermauerte, weiter unten jedoch wieder freiliegende Gräben. Links und rechts von der Straße tritt der Wald bis dicht an diese Gräben heran, den südlichen der Gräben hielten die Verbrecher zur Aus führung ihres Planes am geeignetsten Wie und wann sie es fertig gebracht haben, das Dynamit in diesen Graben Hineinzubekomnien, ist nicht bekannt; aber es ist einerlei: am Tage des Festes ward die Mine von Rupsch gelegt. Die etwa 9 m lange Zünd schnur sührte, vom Geräusch verdeckt hinein in den Wald, wo Küchler des Augenblickes harrte, sie zu entzünden. Und er entzündete sie auch. Weiter und weiter glimmte der Faden, langsam aber sicher. Minute auf Minute verrann, erneuter Jubel dort oben verkündete dem waldeinwärts fliehenden Küchler, daß das Fest zu Ende, die von Mund zu Mund sich fort pflanzenden Hochrufe, daß der Kaiser auf dem Rück wege sei. Doch was war das! Noch immer kein Knall! Weiter, immer weiter eilt Küchler querbuscheiu hinab nach Rüdesheim, um dort mit Rupsch zusammen- zutrefsen. Dort trifft bald darauf auch der Festzug ein, das Attentat ist mißglückt. Der Himmel hatte eS anders gefügt. In der Brust des Rupsch hat das letzte Fünkchen eines bessern Menschen den Sieg da von getragen; rasch wie der Blitz, daß nur Küchler es nicht merkte, bat er die Zündschnur unter dem Ge wölbe etwa 2 m ab von der Patrone entzivei ge schnitten. Nun aber, nachdem der Plan also gescheuert, überkam ihn die Angst vor seinen Auftraggebern. Um den Schein des Verdachts von sich abzuwenden, half er am Nachmittage eifrig mit an den Vorbereitungen zu jenem Attentat an dem einen der Restaurationszclte. Die plausible Ursacke aber, warum die Mine oben auf dem Berge nicht gesprungen war, war für die Anderen der Regen. So ungefähr stellt Rupsch selber den Fall dar. Küchler bestreitet diese Darstellung, hingegen steht der Ortsbefund den Aussagen Rupsch's nicht im Wege. Und jedenfalls liegen die im Processe aufzuklürenden Zweifel nicht bei der Thatsache des AttentatSplanes selber, sondern bei der Tbäterschaft u. s. w.; denn die Thatsache selbst steht einfach schon deshalb fest, weil jetzt unter den Augen des Elberfelder Gerichts genau auf der von Rupsch bezeichneten Stelle etwa 12 bis >3 Pfd. Dynamit aus dem Graben herausgeschafft wurden. Der Graben ist an dieser Stelle 3^ Fuß tief und überwölbt mit einer Mauer, welche sammt dem darauflieg,nden Erdreich ebenfalls noch 2'L Fuß dick ist 13. Capitel. Ein versteckter Feind. „Kommst Du mit nach der Station, Rosie, um den Triumphbogen zu sehen, den sie aufgerichtet haben?" fragte David Haythorn. „Nein, ich nicht," antwortete Rosie kopfschüttelnd. „Ich habe Anderes zu thun, als dorthin zu laufen und zu gaffen." Sie saß, mit Spitzen und Bändern beschäftigt, am Fenster hinter Nelken und Geranien, ihre Mutter bügelte in der Küche, und ihr Vater saß in der Kamin- ecke, seine Pfeife rauchend „Rosie ist eine große Dame geworden, seit sie bei ihrer Tante in Wormington war und Kleidermachcn lernte; hier bei uns ist nichts mehr gut genug für sie," sagte ihr Vater vorwurfsvoll, aber seine Augen ruhten doch voll Stolz auf seinem schönen Kinde. Rosie erröthete ein Wenig und bückte sich über ihre Arbeit. Müßig auf der Fensterbrüstung lehnend sah Hay thorn ihr schweigend zu Mir, dachte er voll Bitter keit, hat es keinen Vortheil gebracht, daß der junge Dorrington heirathet, — denn Rosie erschien so un nahbar als je. Als die Neuigkeit bekannt geworden war, hatte Rosie eifrig gestrebt, nach Wormington zu ihrer Tante zu kommen, um bei dieser das Kleidermachen zu er lernen; wie sie vorgab: um dann einen Dienst als Kammermädchen zu suchen Ihre Aeltern hatten sich, wie immer, bald gefügt, aber David Haythorn diesen Entschluß als den Todes- streich für alle seine Hoffnungen empfunden Ueber * München, 9. Juli. vr. Sigl ist gestern vom hiesigen Schwurgericht wegen verleumderischer Be- l'idigung des Kriegsministers und einfacher Beleidi gung von 4 Offizieren ^es Generalstabes zu einer Gesängnißstrafe von 9 Monaten bei sofortiger Ver- haftuyg verartheilt worden. Von der Anklage wegen Verächtlichmachung der Einrichtung des bayerschen Generatstabes wurde Vr. Sigl sreigesprochen. Weimar, 9. Juli. (Thür. Corr.) Se. königl. Hoheit der Großherzog wird sich anfangs der näch sten Woche nach den Niederlanden begeben, um den Beisetzungsseierlichkeiten dort beizuwohnen. — Der Landtag des Großherzogthums hatte im Frühjahr vor. I. die Kosten für eine Neuversteinung der Staatschauss^en nach Kilometern und Hektometern bewilligt. Diese Maßnahme ist jetzt für diese Chausseen, deren Länge sich auf 161 lcm erstreckt, aus geführt wordeu. Von den vom Landtag bewilligten Geldern zu diesem Zwecke in Höhe von 12000 M. sind nahezu 2500 M. erspart worden. Es ist wün- schenswerth, daß Seiten der Gemeinden eine eben mäßige Versteinuug der ihrer Unlerhaltungspflicht unterfallenden Straßen II. Classe vorgenommen wird. Vielleicht kann die oben erwähnte Ersparniß zu Unter- stützungLz'wecken für ärmere Gemeinden verwendet werdem Wien, 9. Juli. Einer Bekanntmachung der amt lichen „Wien. Ztg." zufolge, ist der Landtagsabgeord nete Felix Graf Vetter v. d. Lilie zum Landes hauptmann in der Markgrafschaft Mähren und der Landtagsabgeordnete vr. Franz Ritter v. Srom zu dessen Stellvertreter in der Leitung des Landtags er nannt worden. Wien, 9. Juli. (Tel.) Die „Polit. Corresp." ist ermächtigt, auf das Bestimmteste zu erklären, daß die von hiesigen Blättern aus dem Journal „Narodni Listy" reproducirten Berichte aus Lettin je über diplomatische Actionen, betreffend die Grenzverhältnisse zwischen Montenegro und der Herzegowina jeder Be gründung entbehren. Pari«, 8. Juli. Der „Figaro" veröffentlicht einen Brief seines tonkinesischen Berichterstatters Paul Bonnetain aus Kanton, in welchem, wie der „Münchn. Allg. Ztg." von ihrem Pariser Berichterstatter ge schrieben wird, die Geschichte des Friedensver trags von Tientsin nach einer Version erzählt ist, welche stellenweise unglaublich klingt, aber nach der Versicherung des Verfassers der strengsten Wahrheit entspricht. Der Generalcommissar der chinesischen Zölle, der Deutsche Detring, hat zwischen dem Vice- könig Li-Hung-Tschang, dessen intimer Freund und Rathgeber er ist, und dem Commandanten Fournier als Vermittler gedient. Bonnetain rühmt seine Ge schicklichkeit und giebt zu verstehen, daß er sowohl aus Freundschaft für den Vicekönig von Petschili, als um seiuen Vorgesetzten, den Generaldirector Hart, einen verstockten Engländer und Franzosenfresser, zu ärgern, die schwierige Mission übernommen halte. Er begab sich an Bord des „Volta", leitete im Auftrage Li- Hung-Tschangs das Nöthige ein und brachte diesem eine geschriebene Antwort zurück. Fournier stellte darin als erste Bedingung die Abberufung des Mar quis Tseng auf. Dann könnte man sich, meinte er, mit China einigen, wenn es eine Kriegsentschädigung entrichten, seine Truppen aus T onkin zurückziehen und den Franzosen in diesem Lande vollständige Hand lungsfreiheit lassen wolle. Detring hatte noch münd liche Instructionen erhalten und setzte den Vicekönig davon in Kenntniß, welcher sich nach einigem Besinnen entschloß, den Brief nach Peking zu senden. Wegen der ersten Bedingung — Abberufung des Marquis Tseng — adressirte er ihn an die Kaiserinregeutin selbst, die ihm ihr Vertrauen schenkt und schon längst gern mit Frankreich unterhandelt hätte. Er rieth ihr, in die Forderung zu willigen; aber die Kaiserin zögerte eine Weile, da sie die Macht der Kriegspartei, welche den Marquis Tseng beschützte, wohl kannte und der Gesandte in Frankreich überdies dem höchsten Erbadel angehvrt. Während sie die Für und Wider erwog, blieb der Coinmandant des „Volta" nicht müßig. Er drohte mit der Beschießung von Ke-Luong (Insel Formosa), wo man ihm keine Kohlen verlaufen wollte, und schließlich gab die Monarchin nach: Ende April opferte sie den Marquis Tseng. Diese Nachricht wurde Fournier vou dem Chinesen Ma-Kien-Schang über bracht, welcher an der Pariser Rechtsfacultät studirt hatte und mit europäischer Sitte vertraut ist. Hierauf begab sich der Commandant des „Volta" als officiöser Unterhändler nach Tsche-Fu und landete am 5. Mai in Tientsin unter dem Vorwande, die Festungswerke ihre Pläne sür die Zukunft war Rosie wortkarg und ebenso wenig sprach sie darüber, we-halb sie zu dienen wünschte, oder ob dies überhaupt ein ernster Entschluß von ihr sei. Sie war gegen Weihnachten nach Hause zurück gekehrt und nm dieselbe Zeit war Harold auch wieder in Dorrington eingetroffen. (Fortsetzung folgt.) Malerei. Bei Gelegenheit eines Bildes von Fritz v. Uhde, welches auf dem Münchner Kunstverein aus gestellt ist, sagt die „Allg. Ztg": Zu den, eine neue Epoche verkündenden Künstlern gesellt sich auch Fritz v. Uhde durch ein Bild, das unstreitig die neue, volks- thümlich angehauchte Richtung unserer Kunst schärfer, ja einseitiger ausspricht, als irgendeines der bisher erschienenen. Ohne Zweifel trug der Bildungsgang des Künstlers dazu in ungewöhnlichem Maße bei, da er, der früher Offizier war und, wenn auch immer zeichnend und malend, doch erst 1876 definitiv den Säbel an die Wand hing und den Pinsel in die Hand nahm, auch dann keinerlei Schule besuchte, sondern vollkommener Autodidakt blieb. Das Resultat ist um so mehr geeignet, zum Nachdenken darüber anzureaen, ob denn unser akademisches Unterrichtssystem wirklich ein richtiges sei. Freilich muhte Uhde lange und in verschiedensten Richtungen suchen, bis er endlich zu einer so bestimmten Richtung kam, wie wir sie in sei nem eben ;>tzt ausgestellten „Lasset die Kleinen zu mir kommen" mit einer überraschenden Energie aus gesprochen finden: den Bruch mit jeder Tradition! diese« Platze- zu studiren, in Wahrheit aber, um mit dem Vicekönig Li geheime Rücksprache zu pflegen. Am 1l. Abend- war da« Uebereinkommen unterzeichnet. Fournier hatte erst am 8. telegraphisch seine Voll machten erhalten und bi« dahin lediglich da« Terrain iondltt. Die erste und größte Schwierigkeit bestand darin, die Oberherrlichkeit Chinas über Anam und Tonkin, an der frühere Unterhandlungen gescheitert waren, so zu behandeln, daß die Chinesen auf die Vorschläge eingehen konnten Da sie nimmermehr in eine Verzichtleistung gewilligt hätten, mußte ihre Ge nehmigung der neuen Zustände erlistet werden, und dies geschah, indem in Art. 2 erklärt wird, das himm lische Reich fühle sich „beruhigt", und verpflichte sich, die chinesischen Truppen au- Tonkin zurückzuziehen und die bereits bestehenden oder kommenden Verträge zwischen Frankreich und dem Hofe von Hue zu achten. Bonnetain wundert sich, daß diese Clausel, welche eine Jahrhunderte alte Politik umstößt, von China angenommen wurde, und sügt hinzu, daß der Commandant sie erkämpfen mußte. Der Chinese, sagt er, ist ganz aus Hochmuth zusammengesetzt und hält sich für das erste Vott der Welt. Man schone seine Illusionen und seine Empfindsamkeit, und mache es ihm möglich, den Schein zu wahren, daß er aus Freundschaft und nicht der Gewalt nachgiebt: dann wird man Alles von ihm erreichen, natürlich nur, wenn man im Vorhinein der Stärkere ist. Fournier wußte das und verschärfte Art. 2, der Tank dem Art. 1 durchschlüpft. Nach diesem Art. l verpflichtet sich Frankreich, gegen Alle und Jeden die Sttdgrenze China's, die an Tonkin stößt, zu beschützen. Auf den ersten Blick mag diese Verpflichtung bedenklich scheinen; sie ist aber weiter nichts, als die Anwendung unserer Pflicht als neutraler Macht, wie sie z. B. Belgien gegen Frankreich und Deutschland obliegt. Der Com mandant des „Volta" machte aber davon einen ge schickten Gebrauch, China fühlte sich geschmeichelt und schien den Art. 2 nur aus Erkenntlichkeit für die ihm gemachten Versprechungen zu genehmigen Es blieb nur noch die Frage der Kriegsentschädigung. Four nier hatte keine genauen Weisungen, that aber, als ob er im Besitze solcher wäre, und verlangte eine über triebene Summe. Damit erlangte er, worum es ihm zu thun war: er jagte Angst ein. Li-H»ng-Tschang entgegnete, da die chinesischen Truppen von dem Kaiser von Anam nach Tonkin berufen worden wären, so hätte dieser für „das zerbrochene Geschirr" einzusteheu und er, der Vicekönig, würde enthauptet, wenn er in eine solche Bedingung willigte UeberdieS hob er her vor, daß auch China seinen „Krach" gehabt hat, und daß neue Steuern Empörungen verursachen wür den. Nicht nur der Thron wäre dadurch be- droht, sondern alles Fremde. Es sei vortheilhaftcr sür Frankreich, wenn es keine Kriegsentschädigung einsteckte und ihm dafür 3 chinesische Provinzen mit 80 Millionen Einwohnern offen bleiben. Der fran zösische Unterhändler ließ sich überzeugen, und Art. 3 wurde vereinbart. Bekanntlich verpflichtet China sich darin, den französischen Handel und Verkehr besonders zu schützen. Sollte es aber seinen Versprechungen untreu werden, so wäre Frankreich berechtigt, die Ent schädigungsforderung wieder aufzunehmen und noch mehr zu verlangen An diesem Vertrage befindet sich als Anhang ein „Befehl" des Tsung-li-Aamen, dessen wörtliche Uebersetzung wie folgt lautet: „Telegraphische Depesche des Tsung-li-Aamen vom 9. Mai 1884. Geheime Mittheilung an den kaiserl Großcommissar der Nordhäsen. Ihr Rapport wurde unterbreitet; wir haben nachstehenden kaiserl. Befehl erhalten: Kaiserl. Befehl. Vor Allem beweist er damit wieder ein Mal schla gend, wie sehr wenigstens der begabte Mensch mit seinen größern Zwecken wächst, wie entscheidend für den Künstler die Wahl eines günstigen, das heißt eines Stoffes ist, der seinem speciellen Talent ent spricht und ihm erlaubt — nein, ihn zwingt, die besten Seiten seines Wesens zu entfalten! DaS in lebensgroßen Figuren ausgeführte Bild Uhde's führt uns in eine Stube armer Handwerker oder Fabrikarbeiter in irgend einer niederdeutschen Stadt oder Vorstadt, wo eben der Freund aller Annen, Christus, sich niedergelassen hat und die zahlreichen Kinder des Hauses sich neugierig um den schönen, fremden Mann versammeln, der mit seinem liebevollen Wesen sichtlich eine mächtige Anziehungskraft auf sie ausübt. Der Kampf derselben mit der angeborenen Scheu vor allem Fremden utid Höherstehenden in den verschiedenen Kindernaturen ist ganz vortrefflich, mit einem so hervorragenden Talent dargestellt, daß man davor schön allen möglichen Respect haben muß.
