größten Teil seiner Truppen geordnet bis Dresden führen konnte. Die Trümmer des linken Flügels sammelten sich am Weißeritzholzhof bei Dresden, wo, wie besonders erwähnt wird, „die Truppen wenigstens einmal hinreichend Holz fanden, sich zu erwärmen". Das österreichische Korps des General Grafen Grünne unter General Elverfeld hatte während der ganzen Schlacht keinen Schuß getan, sondern war unbeweglich bei Briesnitz und Ockerwitz, nur 1500 m vom rechten sächsischen Flügel entfernt, stehen geblieben. Allerdings hatte dasselbe von Rutowsky Befehl erhalten, in seiner Stellung zu bleiben und sich bei einem Angriff aufs äußerste zu ver teidigen. Es stand denn auch noch in derselben, als das sächsische Heer bereits vollkommen den Kampfplatz geräumt hatte und trat, da keinerlei Befehl einging, in der Nacht den Rückzug nach Dresden an. Die österreichische Hauptarmee, obschon rechtzeitig benachrichtigt, traf nicht zur Unterstützung ein. Prinz Karl von Lothringen hatte an fangs geglaubt, daß bei der Festigkeit der sächsischen Stellung und der Kürze des Wintertages kein Angriff mehr erfolgen werde und daher kein Grund zur Eile vorhanden sei. Er hatte außerdem Bedenken ge tragen, die zunächst eintreffenden Truppenteile vorzuführen, ohne die übrigen zu erwarten und dadurch sein ohnehin schwaches Heer völlig zu zerreißen. Als Rutowsky nachmittags um beschleunigte Hilfeleistung ersuchte, setzte er die bereits am Großen Garten ein getroffenen Regimenter in Marsch und rückte mit ihnen an den Vor städten Dresdens entlang bis an die Weißeritz vor, wo er die nach kommenden Truppen aufschließen ließ. Da dies erst um 5 Uhr abends vollzogen war, so kamen, als er den Marsch fortsetzen wollte, die ge schlagenen sächsischen Truppen den Österreichern bereits entgegen. Prinz Karl zog unter diesen Umständen vor, den tief eingeschnittenen Plauenschen Grund nicht zu überschreiten, besonders da es inzwischen völlig Nacht geworden war. Der Gesamtverlust belief sich sächsischerseits auf 1 General, 2 Obersten, 1 Major, 54 Offiziere, 3752 Mann (158 Offiziere und etwa 6500 Mann fielen in preußische Gefangenschaft)?) Außerdem gingen 48 Geschütze, 6 Fahnen und 2 Standarten verloren.
