Churchill beginnt, das englische Dol! mit den schweren Verlusten des Mittelmeergeschwaders vor Kreta vertraut zu machen. Er läßt durch die Admiralität zugeben, daß die Kreuzer „Gloucester* und „Fiji* sowie die Zer störer „Juno*, „Greyhound*, „Kelly* und „Kashmir" versenkt wurden. Zwei Schlacht schiff« und mehrere Kreuzer seien beschädigt worden. — Auch dieses Eingeständnis bedeutet wie üblich nur eine kleine Abschlagszahlung. Wie der OKW.-Bericht feststellte, sind bei den Kämpfen vor Kreta 11 britisch« Kreuzer und 8 Zerstörer, dazu ein Unterseeboot und fünf Schnellboote vernichtet worden. Da selbst der rücksichtslose und opferreiche Einsatz der englischen Flotte die Lage auf Kreta nicht hat ändern können, muß das englische Volk auf schwere Einbußen vorbereitet werden. Mit der Bekanntgabe einiger Nanien glaubt nun Churchill, die Wahrheit vertuschen und die Fragen beschwichtigen zu können. Er erweist sich auch in diesem Fall als der alte Lügner, der nur dann einen Verlust zugibt, wenn er sich auf keine Weise verheimlichen läßt. Der Kreuzer „Gloucester" war 9300 Tonnen groß und hatte eine Geschwindigkeit von 33 Knoten. Er war 1937 vom Stapel gelaufen und hatte 700 Mann Besatzung. „Fiji* ge hörte zu den neuesten britischen Kreuzern, hatte 8000 Tonnen Wasserverdrängung und war 1939 vom Stöpel gelaufen. Während „Gloucester* mit 10,Am-StMtzW arMert war, besaß „Fiji* löL-cm-Seschütze. Lie Zerstörer ,Huno, ,LÄy* und „Kashmir* waren 1690 Tonnen groß, 1939 vom Stapel gelaufen und erreichten 36 Knoten. Die Besatzung bestand aus je 183 Mann. „Greyhound* hatte 1345 Tonnen und war 1935 vom Stapel gelaufen. Ausreden vor dem Unterhaus. Die Lage auf Kreta zwang Churchill, gestern im Unterhaus wieder einmal das Wort zu nehmen. Er wies darauf hin, daß die Kampfe jetzt ein« Woche im Gange seien. Während dieser ganzen Zeit seien die englischen Truppen „in großem Ausmaße den andauernden Luftangriffen ausgesetzt, die die englisch« Luftwaffe infolge der geographischen Lage nur in sehr» beschränktem Maße habe erwidern können". Genau so wie im Norwegen- und Griechenlandfeldzug be hauptete er dann, daß die deutschen Verluste viel schwerer als die englischen seien. Die deutsche Luftüberlegenheit erkannte Churchill an, indem er sagte: „Unsere Flotte war gezwungen, fortwährend ohne Schutz durch Luftstreitkräfte und im Wir kungsbereich der feindlichen Flugplätze zu overieren*. Darauf führte er die schweren Verluste der Kriegsmarine im östlichen Mittelmeer zurück, von denen er aber nur wieder einen kleinen Teil eingestand, nämlich die oben bereits ge nannten Schiffe. Von den beiden Schlachtschiffen und den Kreuzern, die Beschädigungen erlitten haben, meinte er, daß sie bald wieder Dienst tun würden. Churchill schloß seine Aus führung über Kreta mit einem Lobgesang auf das britische Heer und die britische Flotte, wie man ihn schon so oft, be sonders im Zusammenhang mit Dünkirchen gehört hat, wonach der „hartnäckige Widerstand ein Ruhmesblatt in den Annalen des britischen Heeres und der britischen Flotte* eknnehmen werde. Dieser Satz zeigt, daß W. C. dem Ausgang der Kämpfe auf Kreta, „einem der wichtigsten Vorposten Aegyptens", nicht sehr zuversichtlich entgegensieht. Die Flucht «ach Gibraltar. 2 Flugzeugträger, 4 Kreuzer und 4 Zerstörer gingen l« Do». Madrid, 28. Mai. In Gibraltar trafen gestern abend ein englischer Flugzeugträger mit Bombenschäden auf dem Rollfeld und auf der Kommandobrücke, ein Kreuzer und zwei Zerstörer, die ebenfalls mit starken Beschä- digunaen aus dem östlichen Mittelmeer kamen, ein, um in den Docks in Reparatur zu gehen. Eine größere Anzahl Verletzter wurde an' Land gebracht. Mitglieder der Besatzungen erklärten, bei den Treffern, die ihre Schiffe von den deutschen Fliegern erhielten, seien zahlreiche Kameraden ums Leben gekommen, die auf hoher See bestattet wurden. Die englischen Matrosen erkennen den Mut der deutschen Fallschirmjäger uneingeschränkt an. In der Sudabucht auf Kreta sei der Himmel von abspringenden deutschen Soldaten förmlich ver dunkelt gewesen. Die britischen Verluste auf Kreta während der ersten Kampftage betrügen 4 2 0 0 Mann. Bereits am Montag liefen in Gibraltar drei bri tische Kreuzer, zwei Zerstörer und zwei Unterseeboot« schwer beschädigt ein. Sie waren eben falls im Seegebiet von Kreta durch Bombentreffer außer Gefecht gesetzt worden. Neben dem großen Materialschoden sind starke Verluste an Besatzungen zu verzeichnen. Die Ausschiffung zahlreicher verletzter Offiziere und Mann- schaftsn begatt» Dfvtt nach dem «mMM der Schiffe, Aus La Liitea wird «meldet daß schon am 24. Mat der britische Flugzeugträger „Argus" mit schweren Be schädigungen durch Bombentreffer in Gibraltar einaetroffen ist. Der Hafen, von Gibraltar erhalte allmählich das Bild eines „Reparatuvdocks" für außer Gefecht gesetzte britische Schiff«, einheiten. Ein Dutzend englisch«, Kriegsschiff« zur Reparatur in den US«. Ein Neuyorker Blatt teilt mit, daß zur Zeit mindestens ein Dutzend englischer Kriegsschiffe einschließlich eines» Flug- zeugträgers und eines Schlachtschiffes in den USA.-Werften repariert werden. Alle diese britischen Schiffe seien vor der Schlacht um Kreta in Mittelmeergefechten be schädigt worden. Nach Amerika würden nur solche Kriegs- schiff« geschickt, an denen größere Reparaturen notwendig sind. Torpediert... Der USA.-Kutter „General Greene" rettet« 39 Ueber- lebende des britischen Frachters „Marconi* (7402 BRT.), der gestern im Novdatlantik torpediert wurde. Ein zweites Rettungsboot mit 19 Mann wurde vier Stunden später geborgen. Ein portugiesischer Schoner bracht« 13 Besatzungsmit glieder eines englischen Frachtdampfers nach Lissabon, der mit einer Ladung Gummi aus Niederländisch-Indien nach England unterwegs war und von einem U-Boot aus einem Geleitzug im mittleren Atlantik herausgeschossen wurde. Di« heutigeu Wehrmachtsberichte »egen zur Zelt «och «icht vor. Bi» zur letzte« Srouate. Das deutsch« Volk weiß, daß es in jedem Kriege auch Rückschläge gibt, und es ist auf solche vorbereitet. Und doch ging es gestern wie eine Erschütterung durch alle Gaue, als die Kuyde von dem Untergang unseres „Hismarck* kam, der kurz vorher in einem ruhmvollen Gefecht das größte Kriegsschiff der Welt, den englischen Schlachtkreuzer „Hood", bezwungen und das neueste groß« Schlachtschiff der britischen Flotte, den „King George", beschädigt hatte. Noch sind die Einzelheiten her Tragödie, die sich 750 km westlich Brest auf bei« Atlantischen Ozean abgespielt hat, nicht bekannt. Wir wissen nur, daß der „Bismarck* in der Schlacht nördlich Island einen Treffer in das Vorschiff erhalten hat, durch den die Geschwindigkeit dej Schiffes beeinträchtigt wurde, daß die eilig verständigte englisch« Flotte sich aus ihren Schlupfwinkeln auf das weidwund geschossene Wild stürzte, das, nachdem Luft torpedos die wichtigsten Teile, Ruder und Schrauben, zerstört hatten, rund 3—4000 km von dem Schlachtört bei Island entfernt mit wehender Flagg« in die Tiefe gegangen ist. „Wir kämpfen bis zur letzten Granate*, hieß es in der Meldung des Admirals Lütjens an das Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine. Diese knappen Worte werden uns immer in den Ohren klingen, wenn ein unabwendbares Geschick den heldischen Tod deutscher Männer fordert, und weiden im Gedächtnis des Volkes für alle Zeiten einen Ehrenplatz einnehmen. Di« Aelteren unter uns erinnerten sich b«t d«r Nachricht von dem Untergang des deutschen Schlachtschiffes an jenen Dezembertag des Jahres 1914, als, die Vernichtung des deut schen Auslandsgeschwaders bei den Falklandsinseln gemeldet Mrde. Damals W«n die Kreuzer „Scharnhorst", „Gnei sen«:*, „Nürnberg* uud «Leipzig*, von der englischen Ueber. macht zusammengeschvffei^ Mt'OehvMr M in die Fluten» und mit ihnen fanden der Admiral Graf Spee mit seinen beiden Söhnen und 95 v.H. der braven Bemannung den Seemannstod. Für die deutsche Jugend ist dieser Opfergang bis zum heutigen Tag ein Symbol, und neben ihm wird für immer das Wort von der letzten Granate des Admirals Lütjens stehen und das Gedenken an die deutschen Männer, die mit dem „Bismarck* untergingen. Sie werden niemals vergessen werden, und dem heutigen Geschlecht immer ein Vorbild der Pflichterfüllung und des Opfermutes sein. Die Lücke, die durch den Untergang des „Bismarck* in der jungen deutschen Flotte entstanden-ist, wird wieder aus gefüllt werden, und die deutsche Jugend wird den Verlust an Seeleuten wieder wett machen. Es liegt also für den Gegner kein Grund zum Jubel vor. Die Vernichtung von 16 Einheiten seiner Mittelmeerflotte und von 14 schwer- beladenen Handelsschiffen, die in den letzten beiden Tagen durch den OKW.-Bericht mitgeteilt wurden, beweisen die Schlagkraft der Macht zur See, die auch nach dem Untergang des „Bismarck* ungebrochen ist, und nicht ruhen wird, bis England niedergerungen ist. Die Größe der britischen Schiffsraumnot und damit der furchtbare Ernst der Lage Großbritanniens kommt in einer recht verzweifelten Betrachtung der Londoner „Financial News* zum Ausdruck. Das Blatt stellt unter der Ueber» schrist „Der Wettlauf mit den Verlusten* fest: Die nächsten Monate bedeuteten eine kritisch« Zeit, da erst zu Anfang 1942 die Hilfe der Vereinigten Staaten durch Schiffslteferungen wirksam wevden könne. Bis dahin werd« di« Lag« ernst bleiben, wenn die englischen Schiffsverlust« sich fortlaufend auf der Höhe hielten wie wahrend der letzten Monate. Es wevde dann eine Lücke übrig bleiben, die von den USA.» Schiffswerften nicht ausgefüllt werden könne. Diese Lage erfordere es, einmal ganz offen über die Schlacht im Atlantik zu sprechen. , UTA.-Botschafter 1« London soll Bericht erstatten. Washington, 28. Mai. Der USA.-Botschaster in England, Winant, wirb im Lause dieser Woche nach Washington zurück- kehren und dem Staatsdevartement Bericht erstatten. Winant trat seinen Posten in London vor etwa drei Monaten an. Kopenhagen, 27. Mai. Zugunsten des Kriegshilfswerkes für das Rote Kreuze veranstaltete die Landesgruppe DäneMtk der NSDAP, ein Wunschkonzert. Ankara, 27. Mak. Zum 70. Geburtstag des Generals a. D. Demirhän überbrachte der deutsche Militärattache Glückwünsche des deutschen Heeres und des Botschafters v. Pgpep. Im Namen des Oberbefehlshabers des Heere« überreichte er ihm ejn Bild, des verewigten Genevalfeldmar» schalls von der Goltz-Pascha in der Uniform eines türkische» Marschalls.
