Sondernummer normales. All the more incessant seemed the demand for goods in those fortunate coun tries who came out of the war victorious or who had not taken part in it, but here also, very soon, the „boom“ was followed by a crisis. The reduced purchasing power in Europe brought the trade of the oversea raw material countries to a standstill and weakened to a great extent the buying power there. Added to this the prices of DEUTSCHE UHRMACHER-ZEITUNG kes which ruined almost all other industries. Nothing was wanting, then, in the prospect of a long period of prosperity for the Ger man clock factories. But very soon, alas, a new fealure made itself feit, which exercised a bad influence over the demand. Watches and clocks had been articles of culture before the war; they stood between the necessaries. of life and luxuries article. Formerly it was indispen sable for every family to possess one clock; Ihrough the fact that time is tnoney scveral clocks and watches were soon considered needful and the low price permitted it. The impoverishment of the whole world through the war, caused then a complete change also for the clockmaking industry. On the one hand, the countries bordering on Germany to the east, which were in a state of collapse, had lost all buying power, a com- mercial market rendered nearly impossible for the sale of watches, and besides, politi- cal reasons forbidding such trade on the other hand, it was soon obvious in Germany that clocks threatened to become articles of luxury. Matters were made worse by the measures the Government had to take for- [ Malgre cette crise momentanee des de- bouches, l'horlogerie allemande envisage l'avenir avec optimisme. Junghans A.-G. in Schramberg i. W., Partial view Manufacture d' horlogerie Gebr. Junghans A.-G. in Schramberg i. W., Vue partielle the clocks and watches were strongly in- fluenced by the eight hour working time, as a third of the price had to be paid for wages. But in spite of the prevailing crisis, the German clock and watch manufacturer looks into the future with confidence. He knows that competition against him is not easily established in the watch and clock trade, and that the present existing international difficulties will sooner or later be surmoun- ted and the prevailing distress will oblige all human beings to help each other mutu- ally. Besides, the needs of the eastern European countries which have not been supplied for 6 years form a huge reservoir for future trade, and the restrictions con- cerning the building trade must also one day be recalled. Thus a brisk demand for clocks and watches will be created. The German clockmaker is untiring in his efforts to improve and perfect his manufacturing process and by studying the foreign mar- kets, will attain his products the old Stan dard, and, far from becoming lazy and spoi- led by the monopoly markets of the world which has fallen to him, he is ever on the move to win this world monopoly again and again by greater and more perfect achieve- ments.
