Elsa of Brabant is accused by Count Telramund of having murdered her young brother Godfrey. King Henry decides the matter must be left to the arbitration of a duel. Elsa prays that a knight she has seen in a dream, may come to her help, and Lohengrin appears in a boat drawn by a swan. He offers to be Elsa’s champion on condition that she will marry him, but never attempt to find out his name or origin. She accepts and Telramund is defeated. He and his wife Ortrud plan vengeance; the latter on plea of repentance, sows mistrust in Elsa’s heart and then publicly upraids her on the church steps for marrying a nameless man. The marriage takes place, but on the very first evening her curiosity overcomes her and she puts the fatal question. Telramund enters to assassinate Lohengrin, but the latter kills him. In front of the assemb led host Lohengrin announces that he is the son of Par sifal, and that he had been sent to Elsa’s help by the Holy Grail. He takes leave of Elsa. The swan appears, but in answer to Lohengrin’s prayer, dives beneath the water and in its stead rises the lost Godfrey, whom Ortrud had by witchcraft turned into a swan. ' The boat, now drawn by a white dove, glides away with Lohengrin and iMsa sinks senseless to the ground. Composer: Richard Wagner, born 1813, died 1883. Many of our readers will be interested by the following warm and critical appreciation of the talents of Mr. Albert Mallinson, the organist of All Saint’s Church. It is taken from an English paper of repute. “I am glad to see that Miss Ada Crossley is about to give four song-recitals in London, the programmes of which are to be composed ex clusively of songs by Mr. Albert Mallinson. Mr. Mallinson is a Leeds musician, whose early training in Church music was at the Leeds Parish Church, and who was for some time organist of St. Chad’s, Headingley, till the state of his health compelled him to leave the district. He has lived and worked in Australia, in Denmark, and in Germany since then, and has found his metier in song- writing. He has written some hundreds of songs, but none that I have seen show any trace of haste. The variety they display is remarkable, and he seems to have the receptive character of the best song-composers, every poem that attracts his sympathy suggesting to him at once its own most appropriate setting. His happy choice of figures of accompaniment that are never commonplace, but always help the mood and expression of the song, gives to each its individuality. He has lyrical feeling, and is capable of passionate expression, but his strength seems to lie largely in his power of assimilating the character of the poem he sets. He can be elaborate, or grandiose, or simple, in turn, and it is astonishing how, in all these songs, there should be so slight a family likeness; indeed, among all that I have examined, each seems to have its individual note distinguishing it from the rest. If there be any likeness, I should suspect that it arises from similarity of mood demanding similar treatment. Undoubtedly Mr. Mallinson is a song-writer to be reckoned with, and not many living composers possess his peculiar gift for this branch of his art.” On the occasion of his jubilee Director Paul Lehmann-Osten received numerous proofs of ack nowledgement and grateful regard, in letters, tele grams, beautiful flowers and costly presents. Among the congratulators was Princess Reuss.
