THE DAILY RECORD, TDESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1907. 492. Whereby correspondence and parcels sent to or front prisoners of war are to be exempted from payment of postage and insurance fees. The Money Order Service will likewise be available free of charge for remittances to and from prisoners of war. LOCAL. The Rev. J. Davis Bowden being about to retire from the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church here, a deputation of ladies waited on Mrs. Davis Bowden on Saturday last, to present her with a purse of sovereigns, contributed by friends as a mark of their; appreciation of her services to the church, and of the kindnesses shown by her dur ing her long residence in Dresden, to all connected with it. Mrs. Davis Bowden in accepting the gift, ex pressed her pleasure at being so kindly remembered by friends far and near, and begged that her heartiest thanks might be conveyed to them. * In spite of the vast number of songs that already exist, and to which daily new ones are being added, the demand for good, melodious and original numbers does not abate, but on the contrary seems to grow stronger. Many of the additions are unsuccessful for rather obvious reasons:—in some the vocal part is hot singable enough; in others the accompaniment either too unwieldy or, again, lacking; sometimes the melodies remind one too strongly of songs that have already become well-known. A young Dresden composer, Hans Heinrich 1 ittmann, has recently published a number of songs for which he can safely await success. The songs are published in three groups:— 1. Sommergliick, Am Ammersee. 2. Schnitterlied, Octoberlied. 3. Requiem, Unter’m Machandelbaum, Strampelchen. With the exception of Octoberlied (the compass is rather extensive), they are all very singable, the accompaniments good, and the melodies certainly more original than the average modern composition; particularly is this the case with Sommergliick, Schnitterlied and Strampelchen. The songs are published by Eisoldt and Roh- kraemer, Berlin.— W. H. W ROYAL BELVEDERE Grand Concert Daily by the Royal Belvedere Orchestra, under the direction of Herr Kapellmeister Willy Olsen. The brilliant September programme, of the Central Theater offers fresh attractions, inasmuch as some of the artistes have introduced changes in their performances and thereby make new hits. The accomplished humourist Walter Steiner, the five sisters Julian, American singers and dancers, and the “Schutzenlieserln”, a well-balanced quartet of female voices, are among the performers here referred to. Additions have also been made to the pictures shown on the bioscope screen. The international wrestling competition for the Gold Belt of Dresden and a Prize of 5,000 marks in money gains daily in interest, as the less suc cessful of the competitors drop out and the victors try conclusions with each other. The Gold Belt is exhibited in the show-window of Herr Wohlrab, Prager Strasse 20, and a valu able trophy which was wrested from the renowned Hackenschmidt by the Danish world-champion Bech-Olsen, now among the competitors for the Gold Belt, may be seen at the art-shop of Herr Besser, Altmarkt. Two of the events on Saturday evening were very vigorously contested and ended brilliantly: in one case, Dirk v. d. Berg, the champion of Holland, vanquishing the Turkish champion Petlivan; and in the other, Bech-Olsen, the Dane, throwing Randolfi, champion of Austria. The issue of the struggle between the French “Colosse” Pierrard and the Servian giant Antonitch, a very unequally matched pair, was for a long time doubtful, but was de clared in the giant’s favour just within the pre scribed half-hour. In the contests on Sunday afternoon and evening Paxon, German American, and Jackson, the Scotch champion, wrestled for half an hour without de cisive result; Paxon was thrown later in the day by Romanoff, the Russian, in less than 7 minutes; Petroff, the Bulgarian champion, worsted Sturm, the champion of Berlin, after a brilliant display of science on both sides lasting nearly 13 minutes. Another brilliant contest, between Sauerer, the Bavarian champion, and Jackson, was broken off at the expiration of half an hour, and will be re newed this evening. The other fixtures for this evening are: Schneider, Berlin, v. Randolfi, Austria; Paxon, German American, v. Antonitch, Servia. * The programme of this evening’s orchestral concert at the Royal Belvedere will be as follows- (1) Kaisermarsch, Wagner; (2) Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald, Walzer, Strauss; (3) Tonbilder a. d. It has unfortunately been necessary, after the lapse of five years, to make a moderate increase price t ^ ie subscription tickets for the Fhilharmonic concerts in the coming winter, to be given at the Gewerbehaus. In consideration however, of the fact that the III. places and the standing places are occupied for the most part by students of music, the prices of those places have only been raised by 1 mark, in each case, for all the five concerts. The incidental expenses, especially for the soloists, have increased to an extraordinary degree as compared with the first years of the concerts, and in individual instances have doubled. Artists who have engagements in America, and whom the Dresden public has had and will continue to have, great interest in hear- mg, demand fees far above the customary German rate. The places occupied • by subscribers last year will be reserved for them until the 5th of October, and in the mean time will be issued to them on their producing the coupon of the ticket of admission to the last concert of last season at the ticket office of the firm F. Ries, Kaufhaus. The complete programme of the six chamber music concerts to be given this winter by the Petri Quartet is as follows. On the 14th of October, string quartets by: Haydn, in B-flat, op. 76 No. 4; Mozart, in A, No. 464 m the Kochel catalogue; Beethoven, in C op. 59 No. 3. - ' On the 11th of November, string quartets by: Brahms, in B-flat, op. 67; J. Weissmann, in F, op. 14; Draeseke, in C-sharp minor, No. 3 op. 66. On the 2nd of December, Preludio e Fuga by Socotrino; string quartets by: Ernst Toch in A-minor; Wolf, in D-minor. On the 20 th of January, 1908, string quartets by: Grieg, in G-minor, op. 27; Schubert, in D-minor a posthumous work. ’ On the 24th of February, string quartets by: Cherubim, in D-minor; Jos. Suk, in B-flat, op. 11; Schumann, in A-minor, op. 41 No. 1. On the 23rd of March, string quartets by Beet hoven: in A, op. 18; in E-flat, op. 74; in C-sharp minor, op. 131. The Lewinger chamber music concerts in the coming season will take place, not as heretofore at the Palmengarten but in the small hall of the Gewerbehaus, with the assistance of the pianists: Severin Eisenberger, Alfred Griinfeld, and Alfred Reisenauer. The dates fixed for the concerts are the 21st of October, the 9 th of December, the 27th of January, 1908, and the 9 th of March. Fraulein Johanna Tham, the young Dresden pianiste, will give a concert at the Palmengarten on Thursday October 3, which will be her eighth appearance before the Dresden public as a concert- giver. Herr Anton Schlosser, a tenor singer from Munich, will give a song recital at the Palmengarten on. Saturday October 5. Herr Ernst v. Possart will recite a selection from the works of Wilhelm Busch in the large hall of the Gewerbehaus on Tuesday October 15. LATEST ARRIVALS IN DRESDEN up to the 16th of September 1907. Mr. and Mrs T.
