He has known every private grief that a man can know, and he has besides seen rebellion, civil war, defeat, and the loss of some of the fairest provinces of his Empire. He has hardly ever had a day’s rest, and for the whole of the sixty years he has been upon the Throne he has worked harder than any labourer in his dominions. * The Great Art Exhibition, Dresden 1908. A great number of people assembled to hear the monster concert on Thursday last, but the weather was cool, and sitting still almost out of the question. The crowd promenaded in the brilliantly lighted entrance avenue and in the park, and the Saro Military Potpourri was much enjoyed. For tomorow a garden Fete is planned, with fire works and illuminations specially designed in honour of the Esperanto Congress. The Autumn Fete will probably take place on the 26th and the 27th instant. * Bjr appointment to » M. tbe tiormu Emperor J. A. At the art-gallery of Emil Richter, the exhibition of Theo van Rysselberghe’s pictures is to continue for a few days longer; to be succeeded, about the middle of the week, by a collection of paintings by Edmund Steppes, of Munich, whose finely finished landscapes are much appreciated in Dresden. A collection of water-colours by Professor Onorato Carlandi, of Rome are also, to be seen here for the first time; they are for the most part effective landscape views of Rome and the country round. The coloured drawings of Moritz Pretzsch, of Berlin, small landscape subjects from the Liine- burger Heide, are worthy of attention.
