Last year we published several inter views with prominent business men concerning their attitude towards ad vertising. We continue this serial and to-day it is the turn of a younger successful man of the gastronomic world and of a conductor. Das Hauszeichen, mit dem ein Lokal — in ältesten Zeiten der Gasthof — sich bekanntmachte, war schon der Beginn der Wer bung. The sign of the house — originally the sign of the inn — was already a beginning in advertising. The pilgrim’s inns grouped about sacred spots in ancient days were distiriguished one from another by brightly- painted signs. At the great festivals which attrac- ted tens of thousands of strangers to Niniveh or Babylon, to Memphis or Bubastic, to Corinth or Olympia, it was the landlords who began advertising by hanging out their hause-signs. 24
