A Artists, including advertising artists may be divided into two categories, those with outstanding gifts of ima- gination, andthetechnicallytalented. The former, the possessors of rieh imaginative powers make heaven of earth, and abundantly endowed as they are with inventive genius, are at home everywhere, in any past epoch and in any future era. The latter, the technically gifted have a strong practical sense; their realm is that of tangible things, of what presents itself to their gaze, or what they choose to see: a study in still life, an umbrella, hats, shoes, stockings, a car or a typewriter. They are the faithful labourers in the vine- yard of art or of advertising art. They are not by any means Titans, but must not be underestimated. Paul Süss is one of them. He has been successful in making a very art of his handicraftsmanship. He is a master of his material in all its details and achieves the desired effects primarily by the line work in his drawings. This needs a power of drawing only to be gained by prac- tice. Süss worked for years in Ame rica where his will and his talent were subjected to the stern disci- pline necessitated by the high Stan dard required by handicrafts in that land. As a matter of fact, his gra- phic work has something American in it in the best sense of the word. 17 Zeitungsinserat Newspaper advertisement
